Developments in respect of the Christian Brothers.

The Edmund Rice Foundation has agreed to step in and act as proper defendant and it has been confirmed that claims will be met in full. This is a welcome development, although it is subject to court approval, so there will no doubt be further delays for survivors.

The trustees of Edmund Rice Education Australia have spent two weeks negotiating with the Christian Brothers on meeting their financial liabilities.

This is a shocking read. The summary - the Christian Brothers are facing a multitude of civil claims arising from sexual abuse by their clergy. Over the past ten years they have been transferring their assets to a separate legal entity - estimated to be about $1 billion worth of property, each transferred or "sold" for $1. Now they claim they are broke and have insufficient assets to pay claims. Cant wait to see what happens.

I was really pleased to move Walter's admission to the legal profession in the Supreme Court of NSW last week.

Walter Zhuang joined me in 2025 as a paralegal, and then progressed onto a graduate position. He started with limited experience but showed tenacity and commitment, and he became a really valuable asset. Walter's enthusiasm for a good chronology was matched only by his enthusiasm for GYG and Betty's Burgers.

A welcome development.
Legislation has been enacted which will mean survivors can access the superannuation of offenders in satisfying claims for damages.

The Albanese Government is ensuring convicted child sexual abusers cannot hide their assets in superannuation to avoid paying compensation to their victims.We have today passed the Treasury Laws Amendment (The Survivors Law) Bill 2026 through the Parliament.
