BREAKING NEWS: The final wave of strata reforms has received assent!

The Strata Schemes Legislation Amendment (Miscellaneous) Bill 2026 introduces extensive changes affecting owners corporations, strata managers, strata committees, building managers and lot owners.

The reforms affect everything from strata committee training and embedded networks to levy recovery, renovations and more.

IT’S FINALLY HERE!

Strata committee training is now mandatory in NSW.

From today, newly appointed and returning strata committee members are required to complete NSW Fair Trading's mandatory online training within 3 months of appointment. Failure to complete the training within the required timeframe will result in their position on the committee being automatically vacated.

The training is free, completed through Strata Hub and covers key topics including governance duties, repairs and maintenance and decision-making.

Importantly, no motion or minute is required from the owners corporation to authorise the undertaking of the training. However, we have updated our FAGM and AGM notice templates for Compliance Pack members to include an explanatory note with the relevant motion.

A few snapshots from last week’s SCA NSW 2026 Convention! 📸

From sharing plenty of laughs (and scoops!) with Messina, to our actors performing a very entertaining “FAGM” for David and Wade’s presentation, and celebrating at the awards night, it was a fantastic couple of days for everyone involved.

It was great to catch up with industry peers, share insights, have a few laughs and enjoy everything the convention had to offer.

Today we celebrate Matthew Jenkins 20-year anniversary at Bannermans!

Matt’s dedication to strata and his team is second to none. On top of that, he’s an absolute legend of a bloke — and even more hilarious after a few beers!

We celebrated with a few champagnes, and honestly, nobody deserves it more. Two decades working alongside your brother-in-law definitely deserves a celebration! 🥂

Meet the Team > Jun Chen

Jun has been part of Bannermans Lawyers since October 2024. Since joining Bannermans, Jun has worked extensively in the strata team, advising owners corporations and individuals on a broad range of strata matters. His work includes drafting and advising on by-laws, advising on repair and maintenance responsibilities, boundary disputes, tree issues, environmental planning issues and retaining walls.

Before joining the firm, Jun built an international legal career, practising as a Chinese lawyer in Indonesia for more than three years, where he specialised in corporate law, foreign investment and mergers and acquisitions.

Jun is admitted as both a Chinese lawyer and a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Shanghai University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Sydney and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the College of Law.

Around the office, Jun is known for looking after our DIY By-laws platform, helping lot owners navigate renovations and the complex by-law process. Jun is also the type of person who will bring a book to the beach with every intention of reading it, only to spend the day enjoying the view instead.

With his diverse legal experience and commitment to delivering practical outcomes for clients, Jun is a highly valued member of the Bannermans team.

The upcoming strata reforms will reshape levy recovery processes, starting with a new reminder notice deadline that schemes will need to follow closely. Reminder notices will need to be issued between 7 and 10 days after the levy contribution becomes due, and they must include detailed information about the contribution, interest, payment methods and more.

This change will affect how strata managers manage their levy recovery workflows and overdue levy contributions.
