On Friday 13 February 2026, we acknowledged the 18th anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations.

We pause to remember, reflect, and honour the strength of our Elders, families and communities who carry stories of removal, loss, and survival.

This day serves as a reminder of the deep wounds caused by policies which affected children, language and cultures and reminds us all of the grief carried across generations.

The National Apology acknowledges the truth of what happened and reminds us all that healing comes from truth-telling, listening to the voices of survivors and walking together in respect and understanding.

On this anniversary, we honour the Stolen Generations, their courage and enduring love for culture, family and Country.

We stand with them in solidarity, and we recommit ourselves to truth, to healing, and to a future where no child is ever taken from their family again.

We’re saddened to share the news of Shelter SA’s closure on 6 February 2026, and we want to acknowledge the vital role they’ve played in our state for nearly 50 years.

Shelter SA has been a bold advocate for people facing housing insecurity. Their work has helped keep housing on the public agenda and ensured the voices of those most affected were heard.

At Uniting Communities, we’re proud to have partnered with Shelter SA on several initiatives to improve housing outcomes for South Australians doing it tough.

More recently, we’ve been pleased to work together to champion key rental reforms, including ending no-cause evictions, removing barriers to keeping pets in rental properties and better protections for those experiencing domestic abuse.

We also want to recognise Dr Alice Clark, Executive Director of Shelter SA, for her thoughtful leadership and the impact she has helped drive.

Shelter SA's closure comes at a time when more people than ever are feeling the burden of rising rents and mortgage stress.

But their legacy will live on in the work still to come. Together, we’ll keep pushing for change that makes safe and affordable housing within reach for everyone.

Yesterday we connected with other service providers and decorated butterflies for the ‘1000 Butterflies for Non-violence’ initiative.

The initiative creates opportunity to actively demonstrate community support of non-violence and raise awareness of the personal and community impacts of gendered violence.

These butterflies will be delivered to libraries in the Onkaparinga region for display throughout the 16-day days of activism.

Call into your local library, children centres or community centres if you would like to decorate a butterfly to add to the display.

A butterfly could start a conversation that could change a life 💛

On the weekend Alex, our CEO, attended the annual Multicultural Festival of SA. We love working at this festival every year with Community Legal Centres SA and all the other Community Legal Centre’s and community services which attend to educate the community about what we do and the services available to them.

We have been servicing the community for 44 years, but the amount of people we meet daily who don’t know about or have never heard of Community Legal Centre’s astounds us - particularly given how busy we are! That’s why attending events like this is critical.

Absolute bonus that Alex got to the Croatian stall for her yearly Cevapcici roll 💙💚🧡
