Marvel Puppy went down to the Hunter st Chambers to see Barrister Simon Hunt. He wants Mr Hunt to serve a Cease & Desist Order on his Pupper Mum Ms Wendy. All because she wont let him have extra treats and Banana Bread at Cafe's anymore with me.

Hunter Street Chambers will be closing from 1pm 23 December 2025 and reopening on Monday, 12 January 2026 with reduced hours (9AM – 1PM) before returning to normal hours on Monday, 19 January 2026.

Our Barristers, whilst they will be enjoying a well-earned rest with their families, will be available if needed urgently, via their emails listed on our website, www.hunterstreetchambers.com.au. Our telephone will also be monitored remotely during the break for urgent enquiries.

Hunter Street Chambers is very excited to welcome Edward McMahon to our Chambers!

Edward was called to the Bar in 2021. Prior to this, Edward was working as a solicitor in private practice as well as spending time at the ALS and Legal Aid. On 28 June, some of the Members of Hunter Street Chambers attended the Cystic Fibrosis Newcastle Race Day held at the Newcastle Racecourse.

In addition to attending, Hunter Street Chambers also sponsored Race 5, being the Hunter Street Chambers Class 1 Handicap, which was won by Starphistocated!

The Race Day raises much needed funds for the John Hunter Children’s Hospital with auctions, raffles and games. A great day out for a worthwhile cause!

On 12 June, Hunter Street Chambers had the pleasure of hosting a group of Year 12 Legal Studies students from Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School.

Robert Hussey and Paul Cranney of our Chambers held a round table panel discussion with the students regarding the criminal justice system and fielded questions from the students.

We were delighted to host the potential next generation of advocates and wish them success with their future endeavors.

Hunter Street Chambers wishes to announce the retirement of Ralph Warren.

Ralph was called to the Bar in 1985. During the 1980s, Simon Harben SC and Ralph Warren were involved in the founding of the first Chambers in Newcastle. In January 2013, Simon and Ralph established Hunter Street Chambers.

Since that time, Hunter Street Chambers has grown to what it is today, due in part to the support of Ralph. To honour his commitment to Hunter Street Chambers, on Friday 7 February 2025, Ralph Warren was awarded the honour of Hunter Street Chambers First Life Member. The award was celebrated with members of Ralph’s family and others in Chambers.

We felt this was a truly fitting way to commemorate and commend Ralph for his dedication to Chambers, its Members and recognise and acknowledge his outstanding career at the Bar.

Congratulations Ralph!

Exciting announcement, Giles Coakes is now available to act as Mediator in Newcastle based family law matters.

Giles brings a plethora of experience to his role as Mediator, practicing as both a Solicitor and Barrister almost exclusively in the Family Courts jurisdictions. In January 2004 Giles was appointed a Federal Magistrate in the Federal Magistrates Court and then a Judge of the Federal Circuit Court, before retiring after 11 years in June 2015.

Since this time, Giles has frequently acted as Mediator in family law matters and holds a National Mediation Accreditation.

Noting the above, Giles is now unavailable to appear as Mediator in any matters located outside of the Newcastle region and does not conduct mediations via AVL.

On 22 June, some of the Members of Hunter Street Chambers attended the Cystic Fibrosis Newcastle Race Day held at the Newcastle Racecourse. In addition to attending, Hunter Street Chambers also sponsored Race 7, being the Hunter Street Chambers Super Maiden Plate.

The Race Day raises much needed funds for the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, with the event raising a total of $71,183.87!
