Janssen + Maluga Legal is proud to announce that Prof Dr Marilyn Bromberg will be organising a panel discussion at the University of Western Australia with her third year undergraduate Social Media and the Law students on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, 10:00 am - 11:30 am.

Prof Dr Gerhard Janssen will be one of the panel members, which include two other lawyers and a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Prof Dr Janssen is one of JML's Founding Partners. He has been teaching (International) Media Law and Media Economy since 2002 at the University of Paderborn in Germany and has been a guest lecturer at multiple universities across Europe and Australia.

We, at Janssen + Maluga Legal, are proud that our lawyer, Dr Marilyn Bromberg, presented her research on cyberbullying politicians at the Parliament of Victoria this week. Her work in this area is very important, particularly as online harms increasingly impact democratic institutions.

Dr Bromberg has made presentations about cyberbullying and other related topics at several parliaments across Australia, and she is well known for her expertise in this area internationally.

Another very successful criminal defence in the Magistrate Court of Western Australia, and congratulations to the JML Criminal Defence Team to get the case dismissed.

We interviewed Prof Dr Janssen regarding the case.

JML: "What is so special about the case that JML wants to make it public?"

Janssen: "The case was an accusation of burglary. The client was in prison with denied bail based on CCTV footage. The case is important because the defence team showed that by using forensic-scientific methods, pictures and video footage must be questioned and false identity remains a viable defence even in cases which the prosecution may see as strong."

The State League Division Two season has finally arrived, and we kick off our league campaign this Saturday away to Wembley Downs at Butlers Reserve in Scarborough 👊

It’s a full day of action with all three of our sides taking the field:

⏰ Under 18s – 11:00am
⏰ Under 23s – 1:00pm
⏰ First Team – 3:00pm

Our First Team will be looking to start the season strongly, although they know they’ll be facing a tough opponent in Wembley Downs.

📍 Please note: All matches will be played on the top oval, as the main pitch at Butlers Reserve is unavailable.

We hope to see plenty of support there for the Black & Greens as we begin the 2026 league season ⚽️

Another Successful Settlement of our Workers Compensation Team has to be celebrated.

The insurer had denied all liability, but the Team of Prof Dr Gerhard Janssen fought for the client until a satisfying settlement could be negotiated during the Arbitration Process!

Congratulations to our Director and Solicitor Ms Gabriele I. M. Maluga, JD for an outstanding result in the Magistrate Court of Armadale for Criminal Law.

Ms Maluga defended a young lady against an accusation of Unlawful Wounding. The trial resulted in the acquittance of our client on grounds of self-defence, and costs against the State.

It is another success for our highly talented Head of Criminal Law Department at Janssen + Maluga Legal, fighting for the rights of our clients.

Prof Dr Bromberg is an Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia and a practising lawyer with over 15 years of experience. Her work has focused on Body Image Law, Criminal Law, Public Health Law, and Social Media Law, aiming to use legal frameworks to foster positive societal change.

A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and award-winning teacher and researcher, Prof Dr Bromberg has advised attorney-generals and government bodies and continues to use her significant experience to support law reform.

Following her time as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University in 2025, Prof Dr Bromberg now joins our team, focusing on Criminal Defence Law and Criminal Injuries Compensation.

The District Court (Landgericht) Chemnitz, Germany, sentenced the accused in a manslaughter case to 9 years imprisonment (1Ks 210 Js 44369/24).

The Court found that the 43 year old accused Afghan man had killed his fellow countryman following an attack with a kitchen knife on 30 November 2024, the victim's later death in hospital on 9 December 2024 caused by the injuries.

The Criminal Law Team of Janssen + Maluga Legal acted as Auxiliary Prosecutor on behalf of the family of the victim - a brother in Perth and remaining family in Afghanistan.

Prof Dr Gerhard Janssen is additionally handling a compensation claim in Germany for the victim's family: "The tragic loss of a son and brother deeply hurts the family and traumatised the deceased's loved ones. It is important that the victims are acknowledged by the Court and compensation is a necessary consequence."

Am Landgericht in Chemnitz hat ein 42-Jähriger einen tödlichen Messerangriff eingeräumt. Er hat laut Anklage im Chemnitzer Zentrum einen anderen Mann mit einem Messer so schwer verletzt, dass dieser starb.

From all the successful work we can do as lawyers, one group is especially ethically import - the fight for childhood victims of sexual harassment and abuse.

Due to the Civil Liability Legislation Amendment (Child Sexual Abuse Actions) Act 2018, the time limit within which a claim could be brought was removed. This opens up the chance for victims who gave up due to the passing of time and thought they would never be recognised.

The Janssen + Maluga Legal team just won a case for a Western Australia client, who was sexually abused in the 1990s. She was previously not accepted as a victim of her father and went through a hard life of physical and mental issues.

This made it all the more important to win the Criminal Injuries Compensation claim with the maximum compensation amount available to her - after all these years, it is an acknowledgment of the guilt of the culprit.
