Threatening to withdraw visa application papers or reporting someone to the Department of Home Affairs, destroying important documents or not allowing someone access to their immi account is a form of DFV. Know your rights.

If you or anyone you know would like more information or help regarding DFV, please contact Nambour Community Centre on 5441 4724 or visit http://nambourcc.org/dfvresources/

Throughout May, Nambour Community Centre is sharing a series of posts and information about Domestic and Family Violence. Many thanks to Carmen Ler from Apex Business Elevation for your support helping to raise awareness and put an end to the different forms of DFV against multicultural women.

Assistance to Temporary Visa Holders

The Red Cross has announced on its website https://www.redcross.org.au/news-and-media/news/help-for-migrants-in-transition that it will be receiving funding from the Australian Government for the next six months to deliver emergency relief and casework support to temporary visa holders who have no way to support themselves and who have urgent needs. The funds have not yet been received and the Red Cross will work as quickly as possible with the Department of Social Services to finalise the details of the funding and expand assistance to people who are experiencing significant vulnerability. Assistance will include food, medicine and crisis accommodation costs. Please see Red Cross website for information and email to [email protected] with the following information:
- Contact Details (name, physical address, number, email)
- Visa type you currently hold
- What assistance you need

You can call Red Cross at 1800 733 276 during business hours, but they recommend you email them.

Hi Everyone. Clearly we are in an unprecedented situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. I understand many people are impacted and have lost work, including temporary visa holders and bridging visa holders. NZ citizens in Australia are particularly vulnerable. To my understanding, the government is considering what may be done to assist people in Australia who do not hold permanent residency or Australian Citizenship. We will post any news on this as soon as we become aware of any announcement on this issue. If you are a NZ citizen there could be many options for you to obtain permanent residency, so would encourage you to email [email protected] and I will respond when I can.

New Leaf Migration office is dealing with a spike in urgent matters to enable persons to remain in Australia during this uncertain phase in the COVID-19 global pandemic. To do our part we are prioritising assistance to such persons. I ask for your understanding that procesing for less time-sensitive matters may be delayed during this difficult time. All communication is to be done by phone, video conference and email until further notice. If you are in Australia and uncertain about what to do, please email [email protected].

It is only as a community all working together to look after those most in need that we will move through this difficult period.

General Skilled Migration, how is the system settling in?
Since the introduction of the new regional visa framework in November 2019, what is the system looking like?
1. 189 Mission (Nearly) Impossible, all I can say is that this visa is and not that interested in you unless you have great points everywhere it counts.
2. The 190 is the new 189. Slight drawback being that in Queensland for 99.5% of the year it is closed. You must be agile and ready to pounce on the EOI when it breaks cover out of the bushes.
3. The 491 the tortoise – steady, reliable and available. Just reach 50 points and 15 will be given! Beware the income threshold, you might have to take a second job, or not claim legitimate tax deductions so you can make it to PR! Great!
4. The 494 SESR Visa, we have reached the bottom of the barrel. Basically, the state government doesn’t want your skills and your occupation is on the short-term list, and again beware the income threshold and changing employers is not exactly a breeze.
I love taking the multilayered complexities of the immigration system and distilling this into a clear picture of what is realistic and achievable in your circumstances. Our promise is that we can take you from confusion to clarity contact us at nlmigration.com.au
