Tessa Theocharous, the principal solicitor at Kurnai Legal Practice, told the Yoorrook Justice Commission that Indigenous children were routinely subjected to racist slurs, excessive force and over-policing, including unnecessary use of stun guns.

Kurnai Legal Practice was proud to give evidence to the Yoorrook Justice Commission yesterday

Hearings focusing on the criminal justice system continue today at the Yoorrook Justice Commission.

Giving evidence this morning is:
- Kurnai man with connections to Yorta Yorta, Bangerang, Taungurung & Wurundjeri, Peter Hood, Managing Consultant at Kurnai Legal Practice
- Tessa Theocharous, Principal Solicitor, Kurnai Legal Practice

This session will be followed by representatives from Dardi Munwurro - Strong Spirit, Wulgunggo Ngalu Learning Place, Bert WIlliams Aboriginal Youth Services at Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Ltd (VACSAL) and Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency - V***A.

The final hearing today will include a panel of representatives from Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service - VALS.

Government can and must fix this!

Youpla, previously known as the Aboriginal Community Benefit Fund (ACBF), is a funeral insurance provider which sold itself with Aboriginal imagery, messaging and staff over several decades, despite not having any Indigenous owners for the majority of that time.

In March, the company became insolvent, leaving 17,000 Indigenous families with nothing after many had paid tens of thousands of dollars towards policies meant to guarantee them a dignified cultural funeral, also known as Sorry Business.

I've just signed the open letter calling on the incoming government to support First Nations peoples affected by the Youpla (ACBF) funeral fund collapse and . Add your name too!
