Australia’s 2026–27 Federal Budget: Key Migration Measures Confirmed
The Australian Government has released the 2026–27 Federal Budget, confirming several important migration measures that may affect employers, skilled workers, international students, and temporary visa holders.
While the permanent Migration Program will remain at 185,000 places, the Budget reinforces a broader policy direction toward a more selective and compliance-focused migration framework.
Key Migration Measures
Permanent Migration Program Maintained
The permanent Migration Program will remain at 185,000 places, with more than 70% allocated to skilled migration pathways.
The Government has also indicated that increasing priority will be given to applicants already in Australia, particularly across skilled and family visa categories.
This is expected to be especially relevant for:
* Subclass 482 visa holders
* Temporary graduate visa holders
* International students already in Australia
* Other long-term temporary residents
Why This Matters
Although the Budget does not fundamentally restructure Australia’s migration system, it provides a strong indication of the Government’s ongoing migration priorities.
For employers, skilled workers, international students, and temporary visa holders, strategic migration planning and careful application preparation are becoming increasingly important in a more selective and compliance-driven environment.
