🚨 πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί MAJOR CHANGES TO VICTORIA'S SKILLED MIGRATION PROGRAM FOR 2026–27!

If you're considering applying for Victorian state nomination under the subclass 190 or 491 visa, there are some important changes you need to know about!

Victoria has introduced a new Victorian Points Test, which ranks applicants using a separate points system from the federal SkillSelect points test.

The changes include:

βœ… A new points-based ranking system for Victorian nomination

βœ… Points awarded for age, English, qualifications and work experience

βœ… Consideration of occupation skill level, partner skills and Victorian earnings

βœ… New Victorian Government fees for Registrations of Interest and nomination applications

πŸ“Œ IMPORTANT: Victoria's 2026–27 skilled migration program is NOT YET OPEN.

πŸ“„ WANT TO UNDERSTAND THE NEW POINTS SYSTEM?

We've prepared a FREE Victorian Points Test Guide explaining the new system, including the points tables and government fees.

SUBCLASS 189 VISA INVITATION ROUND – 15 OCTOBER 2026

The next Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) invitation round is expected on 15 October 2026.

If you've submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect, now is the time to make sure your details are accurate and up to date.

βœ… Check that your EOI details are correct.
βœ… Update your English test results, skills assessment and work experience, where applicable.
βœ… Review your points claim and ensure all information is accurate.
βœ… Make sure any changes are saved in SkillSelect before the invitation round.

πŸ“Œ Remember: An EOI does not guarantee an invitation, so keeping your information accurate is essential.

πŸ“’ Important changes to Student visa applications from 2 October 2026

The Australian Government has introduced significant changes to who can apply for a Student visa (subclass 500) while in Australia.

From 2 October 2026:

πŸ”Ή Most temporary visa holders will no longer be able to apply for a Student visa while in Australia.
This also affects many people who already hold a Student visa and want to apply for another Student visa onshore. There are, however, some exemptions β€” including in certain circumstances involving course progression, PhD studies and additional time needed to complete an existing course.

πŸ”Ή There are also major changes for partners and children.
In most cases, family members can no longer be included in a new Student visa application unless an exemption applies. Importantly, once a Student visa has been granted, family members can no longer be added later as subsequent entrants β€” and there are no exemptions to that rule.

πŸ”Ή Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 are not affected by the new rules and will continue to be assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged.

These are substantial changes, particularly for people planning to change courses, continue studying in Australia or bring family members to Australia later.

Before enrolling in a course or making decisions about your visa, travel or relocation plans, make sure you understand how the new rules apply to your circumstances.

πŸ“’ IMPORTANT UPDATE: Card Payment Surcharge Ending
From 1 October 2026, the Department of Home Affairs will stop charging the card payment surcharge on visa application payments.
Visa Application Charges (VACs) are commonly paid by card through ImmiAccount and currently attract a card payment surcharge.

The Department has confirmed:
βœ… The card payment surcharge will cease from 1 October 2026
βœ… There will be no related change to Visa Application Charge (VAC) fees
This means applicants paying their visa application fees by card will no longer have the additional card surcharge from 1 October 2026.

One of the biggest myths I heard as an immigration officer… and I still hear now as a migration agent.

The 482 Skills in Demand visa allows skilled professionals to live and work in Australia through an approved employer sponsor. It’s designed to address genuine skill shortages across key industries and can offer a pathway to permanent residency, depending on your stream and circumstances.

Navigating sponsorship, eligibility, and the right stream can be complexβ€”but getting it right from the start makes all the difference.

Thinking about a Partner Visa and not sure whether you meet the de facto requirements?

πŸ‘‰ Each Australian state and territory has its own requirements.
Fees, waiting periods, documents and processing rules all vary, so make sure you check what applies in your location before you register.

πŸ“Œ A quick reminder:
Registering your relationship does not replace the need for solid evidence of your relationship. However, it can support your visa application if:
β€’ You have not lived together for twelve months, or
β€’ You are unable to gather enough proof of living together.

βš–οΈ Important note:
Before you make any decisions, consider speaking with a family lawyer. They can explain the legal implications and whether relationship registration is the right option for your personal circumstances.

❀️ Being informed helps you make confident decisions about your future together.

Ready to take the next step in your partner visa journey?

You may visit our website or email us with your circumstances, and we will assess whether we can assist with your partner visa matter.

Alternatively, you can book a paid consultation with our senior Registered Migration Agent for a comprehensive discussion of all available options.
