Last night, Marcus Carbone had the privilege of speaking at the St George – Sutherland Shire Regional Law Society Young Lawyers’ Dinner, as part of the CPD panel: Building Your Legal Career: Pathways, Pivots & Possibilities.

Hosted by Grace Jordan (Young Lawyers Representative), Marcus joined an outstanding panel alongside Louisa McKimm (DCJ) and Bradley Peterson (Culwalla Chambers) to share insights on navigating a legal career.

A key theme of the evening was reflection. For Marcus, it was a rare opportunity to step back and consider the journey that led him to MTK Lawyers — one defined not by a straight line, but by a series of unexpected pivots.

Like many lawyers starting out, the traditional goal was partnership in a large firm. However, along the way, new opportunities emerged — prompting changes in direction and perspective. This led to an important takeaway:

👉 Have a clear vision, but stay flexible enough to embrace opportunity.

Marcus shared that while long-term direction is important, focusing on achievable short-term goals often drives greater progress and satisfaction.

Another topic that strongly resonated with the room was work-life balance. Marcus emphasised that balance is not a one-size-fits-all concept — it’s deeply personal.

For example, starting the day at 3:30am might seem unconventional, but it allows him to prioritise a non-negotiable: being home for dinner, bath time, and bedtime with his children.

Proud to give back to where it all began 🏉

MTK Lawyers is proud to support Southern Districts Junior Rugby Union — a club that has played a huge role in shaping not just players, but lifelong friendships and character.

For Marcus Carbone, this partnership is especially meaningful. He still remembers those cold winter mornings some 25 years ago, pulling on the Souths jersey, travelling across NSW with his best mates, and creating memories that have truly stood the test of time.

Grassroots rugby is about more than the game — it’s about community, resilience, and connection. We’re honoured to support the next generation of players as they build their own stories and friendships through the game we all love.

Yesterday Ellie was admitted as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Marcus had the privilege of moving for her admission.

Ellie was the first person to join MTK Lawyers in 2024. It has been a pleasure to witness her growth and development to reach this point in her career. We look forward to the next chapter of her career as a lawyer at MTK Lawyers.
