This long-awaited legislative change will finally end the misnomer where parents and the community, more broadly, inaccurately assume that ‘equal shared parental responsibility’ means equal time with each parent’ even when that may mean unsafe arrangements for children.

“It is seeing women make agreements with perpetrators to have access to the children, to put them in situations they are not safe because they feel like they have no other choice. So these are women who are facing homelessness or other really vulnerable situations and this presumption of equal shared parental responsibility is being misunderstood as a right of a parent to exercise, that an abusive parent has some right that need to be protected. Rather than the focus, which the entire system should have, which is the best interests of the children.” Nadia Bromley
