For an Australian Partner visa, the Department of Home Affairs looks closely at whether the relationship is genuine and continuing, rather than simply relying on a marriage certificate or the length of the relationship.

A strong Partner visa application should tell a consistent story.

The application should explain:

How you met → how the relationship developed → when you moved in/engaged/married → what you do together → periods of separation → significant events → future plans.

The evidence should support that story. Quality and consistency are more important than simply submitting hundreds of photographs or messages.

⚠️ Common weaknesses

Be careful if there is:

* Very limited evidence of living together
* Little or no financial connection
* Long periods apart with little communication evidence
* Family/friends unaware of the relationship
* Inconsistent relationship histories
* Different answers about important events
* A relationship that appears to have developed primarily for migration purposes
* Documents that don’t match the claimed timeline

For relationships based on a de facto relationship, you must meet the de facto relationship requirement

Generally, you must have been in the de facto relationship for at least 12 months immediately before applying for the Partner visa. Time spent merely dating or being in an online relationship generally does not count as being in a de facto relationship.

The 12-month requirement can be waived in certain circumstances, including where:

* The relationship is registered with an Australian State or Territory authority.
* There are compelling and compassionate circumstances.

PARENT VISA 🇦🇺
Planning to bring your parents to Australia? New application procedures, significant costs and long queues make early planning more important than ever.

✔ Check your eligibility
✔ Understand the Parent Visa queue
✔ Compare 103 vs 143/864 options
✔ Prepare your documents correctly
✔ Get professional migration advice

Parent Visa — Key 2026 Updates

1. Online applications
From 1 July 2026, new applications for Parent visas subclasses 103, 143, 804 and 864 must be lodged online through ImmiAccount. Temporary Contributory Parent applications (173/884) continue to use the paper process.

2. Very long processing queues
Parent visas remain subject to capping and queuing, with processing generally occurring according to queue date. As at 31 May 2026, Home Affairs reported that Contributory Parent (143) applications were being assessed around the November 2018 queue date.

3. Parent visa places remain limited
The Parent visa planning level has been maintained at 8,500 places in recent program years, meaning demand significantly exceeds available places.

4. Contributory Parent visas remain the faster—but more expensive—option
Subclass 143 Contributory Parent provides permanent residence but has a substantially higher cost than subclass 103.

5. Balance of Family Test still applies
For the permanent Parent visa subclasses, applicants generally need to satisfy the Balance of Family Test, subject to the applicable rules.

6. Other options remain available
Australia also has the Sponsored Parent (Temporary) subclass 870, which allows eligible parents to stay temporarily for up to 3 or 5 years at a time, with a maximum total stay of 10 years.

❤️ Reunite your family in Australia — plan ahead!
