πŸ“° Major migration update

Several outlets are reporting that the government is planning further migration cuts to help meet its budget targets. More detail to come as it is confirmed.

27/07/2026

πŸ“Š Tasmania's 2026-27 skilled nomination places are set: 2,050 in total.

Migration Tasmania has confirmed the l 2026-27 allocation: 1,250 places for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and 800 places for the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491). The program reopens to new Registrations of Interest in the coming weeks, and Migration Tasmania will publish the 2026-27 settings and guidelines when it does. Read them closely for any changes before you register.

The important point: if you have a nomination application already lodged but not yet decided, Migration Tasmania will assess it against the requirements in place when you lodged, and if approved you are nominated in SkillSelect. A pending subclass 491 application, however, will not be considered for subclass 190. To be considered for 190 you would need to withdraw your current application and register for 190 once the 2026-27 program opens, and a new 190 invitation then depends on the level of interest and the pro-rata places available. Withdrawing is a significant step, so get advice on your own circumstances before you do anything.

πŸ“Œ Save this if you are planning a Tasmania 190 or 491.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Three state changes worth knowing this week: ACT, NT and the Great South Coast DAMA.

ACT is replacing its nomination portal: last Canberra Matrix lodgements in the old portal by 12 July, new portal live in the week starting 27 July (subject to change), and existing Matrix submissions transfer automatically but can only be withdrawn, not edited. With the new portal comes the first fee change in 14 years: $25 per Canberra Matrix submission plus $325 per nomination application, $350 all up with one submission, all ex GST. Matrix validity stays six months, extendable to twelve by updating, and every edit is assessed as a new submission with ties ranked by the date last updated. The ACT met its 2025-26 allocation with 1,600 nominations approved.

NT has fully exhausted its 2025-26 nomination allocation. Queued applications keep processing and eligible cases will be considered when 2026-27 allocations arrive.

Victoria's Great South Coast DAMA nomination fees rose on 1 July: $850 per nominated worker for businesses under $10 million turnover, $1,000 above it, ex GST. Applications lodged before 1 July keep the old fees.

The important point: state settings move independently of the federal program, and timing a lodgement around these dates can change your fee or your queue position.

πŸ“Œ Save this if a state nomination is part of your plan.

✈️ The yellow arrival card is going digital.

Announced 13 July 2026: the Government is putting $56.1 million over four years into traveller modernisation. The Australia Travel Declaration, piloted with Qantas since October 2024 and used by more than 450,000 passengers into Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, extends to Perth and Adelaide before the end of 2026, then rolls out to every international airport and seaport over the next 12 to 18 months. Webform first, in-app options after.

The important point: this changes the arrival card, not your visa. Visa requirements, processing and conditions are untouched. It is one less paper form on the plane.

πŸ“Œ Save this if you have arrivals planned in the next 18 months.

πŸŽ“ The 2027 international student cap is staying at 295,000.

The important point: the National Planning Level for international student commencements will not increase in 2027. It is held at the same level as 2026, at 295,000, which is about 8 percent below the immediate post-COVID peak, and current tracking has commencements coming in below the cap in both 2026 and 2027. This is about certainty for the sector, not a new cut. It sits alongside the 1 July visa fee changes: student and temporary graduate visa charges rose 25 percent, existing lower fees for Pacific and Timor-Leste students continue, and a new lower rate has been introduced for students from ASEAN countries, standalone ELICOS, and non-award courses. From 2027, the Australian Tertiary Education Commission will oversee international student allocations for higher education providers, while the Government continues to set the overall planning level.

πŸ“Œ Save this if you are planning a student application or advising students for 2027.

πŸ›‚ The Working Holiday age cap just moved from 30 to 35 for four passports.

From 1 July 2026, nationals of Cyprus, Finland, Germany and the Republic of Korea can apply for the Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa up to age 35. The important point: the regulations now set the default subclass 417 age cap at 35, and the lower cap of 30 only applies for Belgium, Estonia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Taiwan. The change applies to applications made on or after 1 July 2026, and applications lodged before that date are assessed under the old age criteria.

πŸ“Œ Save this and check the cap for your passport before you plan around it.

πŸ“Š Visa fees jumped about 25% on 1 July.

From 1 July 2026 most visa application charges rose by around a quarter for the standard applicant. Skilled Independent (189) went from $4,910 to $6,135; Skilled Nominated (190), Skilled Work Regional (491) and Employer Nomination (186) to $6,140; and Skills in Demand (482) from $3,210 to $4,015. Student (500) rose from $2,000 to $2,500, the offshore Visitor (600) from $200 to $250, and both working holiday maker visas (417 and 462) to $840. The biggest rise in dollar terms was the partner visa: the combined first instalment went from $9,365 to $11,710, up $2,345.

πŸ’° The charge that applies is the one in force when you lodge, so budget the new amount.

πŸ“Œ Save this and factor the new charge into your plan.

πŸ“Š The June 189 round had no single cut-off. It ran from 65 to 100.

The Department of Home Affairs has released the results of the SkillSelect invitation round on 4 June 2026. 10,000 expressions of interest were invited for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), with a tie-break date of 24 April 2026. The important point: there is no single national pass mark. The published figure is the minimum points score invited for each occupation, and on 4 June that ran from 65 all the way to 100. Trades cleared the 65 floor, while many science, health and engineering occupations needed 90 to 100. And several of the largest occupations in the pool, including Chef, Early Childhood Teacher, Software Engineer and Accountant, do not appear in this round at all.

πŸ“Œ Save this and check the minimum for your own occupation, not the lowest one in the round.
