Parent Visa Update: Online Lodgement Goes Live 22 April 2026

A significant change is coming for families hoping to reunite in Australia.

From 22 April 2026, the Department of Home Affairs will require permanent Parent visa applications to be lodged online via ImmiAccount. Paper applications will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances, such as confirmed technical failures with the platform.

The four subclasses affected are: 103, 143, 804 and 864.
What key benefits are there for applicants?

✅ Immediate confirmation of lodgement
✅ Simpler document uploads and case tracking
✅ Improved communication with the Department

If you or a family member are currently preparing a paper application, it may be worth pausing and waiting for the online portal to go live so you start the process in the most streamlined way possible.

Parent visas remain one of the most complex and queue-sensitive areas of Australian migration law. Getting your application right at lodgement matters enormously.

At WPM Lawyers, our team has always provided advice and assistance to our clients on parent visa strategy and lodgement. This is a long overdue, and welcomed update.

If you’d like to understand your options ahead of this change, we’d welcome a conversation.

Congratulations to our very own Kim Heap!

We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Kim Heap, Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law, has been recognised in the Best Lawyers™ list for Immigration Law in Tasmania.

Kim was the only solicitor in Tasmania to receive this honour for Immigration Law, with our esteemed Barrister colleague Nicholas Poynder also receiving this recognition.

This achievement is a true reflection of Kim's dedication, expertise, and the exceptional care she brings to every client she works with. Immigration law is a complex and deeply personal area of practice, and Kim's commitment to achieving the best outcomes for her clients is second to none.

Please join us in congratulating Kim on this well-deserved recognition! 👏

You Chose Each Other. Now Choose the Right Lawyer.

Partner visas are among the most personal, complex, and emotionally charged applications in the immigration system. One missing document, one poorly worded response, one overlooked requirement - and the process can stretch into years of waiting. Or worse, end in refusal. That's not a risk worth taking.

What Makes Partner Visas So Tricky?

The Australian partner visa process is a two-stage journey - a temporary visa first, then permanent residency. This process can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. Along the way, you'll need to prove the authenticity of your relationship across four key areas:
• Financial - shared accounts, joint assets, combined expenses
• Social - how the world sees you as a couple
• Household - living arrangements and shared responsibilities
• Commitment - the depth and future of your relationship

Immigration officers are trained to spot the gaps.

BREAKING NEWS | Subclass 407 Training Visa — The Rules Just Changed

Effective tomorrow, 11 March 2026, the bar has been raised for SC407 visa applications.

Applicants can only lodge a Subclass 407 visa if they already have BOTH:

A) An approved Temporary Activities Sponsor; AND

B) An approved Nomination,

No sponsor approval? No nomination approval? No visa lodgement which for onshore applicants, means no bridging visa either.

This is a significant shift that will catch many applicants and employers off guard.

What does this mean in practice?

→ Sponsorships need to be lodged as soon as possible.

→ Nominations must be lodged as soon as possible.

If you have SC407 application that is not yet lodged, that has a pending Sponsorship or Nomination, today is your final opportunity to lodge the SC407 visa.

Most of our work is 'behind-the-scenes'. Sometimes we play a small part in a public story as was the case in this brilliant outcome for our client, Bryce Cotton, who is a 5-time MVP in the NBL.

It's the quality of our clients that makes WPM Lawyers unique.

Five-time NBL MVP Bryce Cotton has had his Australian citizenship application approved, sources told ESPN, with a swearing-in ceremony scheduled ahead of the commencement of the 2025-26 NBL season.
