Tanya Ponggun named winner of the 2026 AILA Young Professionals Public Speaking Competition

Congratulations to Tanya Ponggun of Rural Affinity, who has been named the winner of the 2026 AILA Young Professionals Public Speaking Competition Honouring Ron Shorter, following a fantastic Grand Final in Melbourne.

Tanya took out the $5,000 first prize and trophy with her presentation, “Underwriting is just like Dating”, impressing the judging panel with her presentation and public speaking skills.

Zara Jays of Hunt & Hunt Lawyers was awarded second place and the $2,000 prize for her presentation, “Forever Chemicals, Forever Liability: Why PFAS May Be Australia’s Next Asbestos Crisis for Insurers”, while Will Hodgman of MinterEllison took third place and the $1,000 prize with “When the Machine Says No: The Litigation Risk of AI-Driven Claims Decisions”.

All three finalists should be incredibly proud of reaching the Grand Final.

After progressing through a competitive semi-final and undertaking dedicated public speaking training, Tanya, Zara and Will delivered three very different presentations and demonstrated the depth of emerging talent within Australia’s insurance industry.

The finalists were judged by an outstanding panel of industry leaders: The Hon. Justice Michael Osborne of the Supreme Court of Victoria; Hamish Redd SC of Dever’s List; Lisa Mitchell, Head of Claims – Australia at Markel; and Simon Bogli, Senior Claims Advisor – Claims Management at WTW. AILA sincerely thanks each of our judges for generously giving their time and expertise to the competition.

Our thanks also go to Derek Rowe of the Australian Institute of Management (AIM), who worked with and trained the finalists in the lead-up to the Grand Final. Derek’s guidance and commitment to developing the finalists’ presentation skills is an important part of what makes this competition such a valuable professional development opportunity.

The evening was MC’d by AILA National President Melanie Quixley, with a special appearance from 2025 competition winner Simone Snell, who joined us via video link all the way from Spain as our “filibuster” while the judges deliberated.
