Australia is set to issue its one millionth refugee visa since 1947 in the coming weeks, in a humanitarian program that grew directly out the ashes of World War II.

Thinking of all the families, friends and lovers that will be re-united from tomorrow. It's been a long wait. Enjoy.

Almost two years since Australia's international border was closed, it will reopen to the world on Monday 21 February, bringing relief to those on temporary visas who have been separated from their families overseas.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support through these recent challenging years of 2020 and 2021. I have felt much pain and frustration for many of you as we've navigated Australia's closed borders and shifts in processing timeframes. And I've felt elation for those of you who have been able to reconnect with loved ones or commence new beginnings in Australia. I am honoured to be a part of your immigration journey.

For now, I wish you and your loved ones a safe and beautiful festive celebration, particularly for those who may be celebrating with loved ones across international borders. Or even internal borders in Australia.

I look forward to being in touch in 2022. Until then, I am taking some rest!

Warm Regards, Kathryn, KTA Migration

Please know that I will be taking leave from Wednesday 22 December 2021 and will return to the office on Monday 10 January 2022. I will be monitoring emails over this time for urgent matters, including Department of Home Affairs correspondence.

Partner Visa Changes - English Language

From late 2021, new Partner visa applicants AND Permanent Resident Sponsors will be required to have functional level English or to demonstrate that they have made reasonable efforts to learn English such as through the completion of free English language classes through the Adult Migration English Program (AMEP).

Most Partner visas are a provisional visa of two (2) years before becoming eligible for a permanent visa. The requirement will have to be met at the time of granting the permanent visa.

These changes, as stated by The Hon Alan Tudge MP, Acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, are aimed towards enhancing social cohesion and economic participation outcomes:

“While the ability to speak multiple languages is a great asset for an individual and for Australia, a person will struggle to fully participate in our society and democracy without basic English. These new measures will provide further opportunity for migrants and new citizens to maximise their opportunities in Australia.”

A succinct overview of the migration path ahead of us.

The federal government has revealed its plans to attract the “best and brightest” skilled migrants from around the world when international borders reopen, as Australia enters its slowest population growth in more than a century.

Australian citizens (and in limited cases permanent residents) who are unable to return to Australia due to COVID-19 restrictions and are experiencing financial distress, may be eligible to access financial support from the Australian Government. The support comes in the form of both loans and grants and aims to help cover living costs and/or a flight back to Australia. For information on eligibility, the amount of grants and loans and the application process, refer to the Smartraveller website.

"Until Covid-19 hit and borders became hard, many Australians held, at least in their minds and imagination, a sort of dual citizenship. The first citizenship was Australia, a citizen of the world was the second.""

Australia is one of the only democracies that has effectively banned its citizens from leaving, ending a long run of hypermobility
