If you learnt to drive a car with a motorcyclist in the passenger seat, chances are you heard “check for bikes!” more times than you can count.

One of our team members certainly did.

Growing up with a dad who rode motorcycles, from Harleys to Ducatis, meant learning early how easily a rider can disappear into a car's blind spot. Even years after getting her licence, she can still hear him reminding her to check before changing lanes.

For riders, that extra check can make all the difference.

According to the TAC, 1,152 motorcyclists were seriously injured on Victorian roads in 2025, up from 1,030 the previous year.

And while riding brings a lot of people genuine joy, whether it's the freedom, the convenience of a quicker commute home, or a weekend ride up the Spur, the consequences of a crash can be devastating.

This October, for Motorcyclist Awareness Month, we're reminding drivers to take that extra moment to check for motorcycles, particularly at intersections, and before changing lanes.

Robodebt Settlement Payments: More common questions answered

We’ve seen a number of questions about Robodebt Settlement payment timeframes, particularly the 14-week timeframe and the different payment statuses displayed in the Claimant Hub.

We understand that some Group Members have been given conflicting information about when they can expect to receive their payments, and we apologise for the confusion and frustration this has caused.

In this post, we explain:
• What the 14-week timeframe means
• What the different payment statuses in the Claimant Hub mean, including "Payment Pending" and "Batch Pending Review"
• What happens as your payment progresses
• How you'll know when your payment has been completed and when to expect the funds in your bank account

Payments are being made progressively in batches with the assistance of a third-party payment provider. With more than 100,000 Fixed Payment Group Members to receive payments, the process takes time, and not everyone will receive their payment at the same time.

Yesterday marked 56 years since the West Gate Bridge collapse, one of Australia's worst industrial disasters.

On 15 October 1970, 35 construction workers lost their lives when a section of the bridge collapsed during construction.

Members of the Gordon Legal team joined unions, workers, families, and the wider community at the West Gate Bridge Memorial in Spotswood to honour the lives lost and pay their respects.

The tragedy was a turning point in Australia's workplace safety history, helping drive changes to improve protections for workers.

More than five decades on, it remains a reminder of the importance of strong workplace safety laws, the role of unions in advocating for safer working conditions, and the fundamental right that every worker has to return home safely at the end of the day.

We remember the 35 workers who never made it home, and the families, friends, and colleagues who are forever affected by their loss.

National Ride2Work Day is an opportunity to celebrate cycling as a healthy and sustainable way to travel while recognising the importance of road safety for all road users.

Whether you're a regular rider or commuting by bike for the first time, taking simple precautions such as wearing a properly fitted helmet, remaining visible, and staying alert can help reduce the risk of injury.

Despite these measures, cyclists remain among the most vulnerable road users and can suffer significant physical and psychological injuries when transport accidents occur. Understanding your rights following an accident is an important part of the recovery journey.

If you’re injured at work and can’t return to your normal duties straight away, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re unable to work at all.

If you have an accepted WorkCover claim and some capacity for work, your employer may have an obligation to provide suitable duties for up to 52 weeks, where those duties are available.

Those duties could include reduced hours, lighter physical work, administrative tasks or other work that fits within the restrictions outlined by your treating doctor and Certificate of Capacity.

And while an employer’s obligation to provide suitable duties is limited, your potential WorkCover entitlements may continue beyond that period.

Gordon Legal has launched a landmark privacy class action on behalf of Australian veterans and their families, following revelations that the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) routinely disclosed highly sensitive personal and medical information to the University of South Australia (UniSA).

The disclosures occurred as part of the Medicines Advice and Therapeutics Education Services Program (MATES Program), which UniSA operated on behalf of DVA from 2004.

The class action alleges that DVA unlawfully shared the sensitive personal information of approximately 300,000 veterans and their family members who held a DVA-issued health card, known as “White” or “Gold” Cards.

The program was shut down in February 2024 after the Defence and Department of Veterans’ Affairs Human Research Ethics Committee withdrew its ethics approval on 5 February 2024, triggering widespread concern across the veteran community.

Gordon Legal is encouraging anyone who believes they may have been affected by this unauthorised disclosure to search 'Gordon Legal DVA' online and visit the firm's DVA class action page for further information and to register their interest.

Returning to work after an injury can be one of the hardest parts of recovery.

Managing workplace expectations, navigating the return-to-work process, and getting the right support can make an already difficult time more stressful.

The AMWU’s new Return-to-Work Support Officer role will focus on identifying the barriers injured workers face and developing practical solutions to help them return to work. The role is funded through WorkSafe Victoria’s Innovative Return to Work Practices Grant Program.

Our Union Relationship Manager, Carol Saunders, attended the announcement at Bendigo Trades Hall this week on behalf of Gordon Legal, a proud partner of AMWU Victoria.

Steve Dimopoulos, Minister for WorkSafe and the TAC, also attended and congratulated the AMWU on its proactive approach to supporting injured workers.

“It’s October - show me the money.” 💰

We’ve seen a number of questions about Robodebt Settlement payment timeframes, particularly what it means when we say payments will be made “from October”.

The important thing to know is that October is the beginning of the payment period. It does not mean that everyone will receive their payment in October.

We’ve answered some of the common questions in this post, including the different timeframes for Fixed Payments and Individual Assessment payments.

We’ve also noticed some comments suggesting payments are being delayed so funds can continue earning interest for Gordon Legal’s benefit. We want to reassure everyone that no interest is retained by Gordon Legal and, importantly, that’s not the reason for the payment timeframe.

With more than 100,000 Fixed Payment Group Members to receive payments, each payment needs to go through the required checks before funds can be transferred. This process takes time and requires payments to be made over the payment period rather than all at once.

$11,500 was taken from Felicity Button’s bank account under Robodebt.

She decided to fight back.

Today is Mesothelioma Awareness Day.

Around 700 to 800 Australians are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year, or about two people every day.

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer most commonly associated with exposure to asbestos, and it can develop decades after the exposure occurred.

Behind those numbers are people and families dealing with a life-changing diagnosis.

At Gordon Legal, our Dust Diseases team supports people diagnosed with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases to understand their legal rights and the options available to them.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day is an opportunity to recognise those living with the disease, remember those who have lost their lives to it, and continue raising awareness of the ongoing impact of asbestos exposure in Australia.
