NSW Subclass 491 Skilled Migration | 3 Nomination Pathways Explained!

Planning to live and work in regional NSW? The Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491) is a points-tested provisional visa for living, working and studying in designated regional areas for up to 5 years.

NSW has 3 nomination pathways:

Pathway 1 – Regional NSW Employment: For skilled workers continuously employed by the same regional NSW employer for at least 6 months who meet occupation and salary requirements.

Pathway 2 – NSW Invitation: For skilled migrants in occupations on the NSW Regional Skills List who meet employment or residency requirements.

Pathway 3 – Regional NSW Graduates: For graduates of a regional NSW institution (bachelor’s, master’s or PhD) within the previous 2 years who meet additional requirements.

Important:
NSW nomination is highly competitive. Meeting eligibility does not guarantee nomination.

Pathway 2 invitations consider age, English, education, points and skilled work experience.

Pathway 2 invitees have only 14 days to submit their nomination application.

Program status: NSW has announced that Subclass 491 nomination applications are currently closed because all available places have been allocated.

Are you considering applying for NSW nomination under the Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)?

The NSW Subclass 190 visa provides a permanent residency pathway for eligible skilled workers who meet the state's nomination requirements.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Your occupation must be eligible and fall within an ANZSCO unit group on the NSW Skills List.

VICTORIA’S NEW POINTS TEST FOR SUBCLASS 190 & 491 VISAS!

Victoria has introduced the Victorian Points Test (VPT) to rank Registrations of Interest (ROIs) for its 2026–27 Skilled Migration Nomination Program.

How many points can you receive?

The VPT assesses seven factors:

1. Age – Up to 300 points
2. English language – Up to 200 points
3. Years of experience in your nominated occupation – Up to 100 points
4. Educational qualifications – Up to 100 points
5. Occupation skill level – Up to 50 points
6. Eligible partner skills – Up to 50 points
7. Eligible annual earnings from skilled employment in Victoria – Up to 150 points

Important Changes to Note

• Single applicants receive 0 points for the partner skills factor.
• NAATI points are not a separate factor under the VPT.

Which Industries Are Prioritised?

Victoria prioritises eligible occupations in:

• Healthcare
• Social Assistance
• Education
• Construction

Is There a Fixed Passing Score?

No. The VPT has no fixed pass mark. The Australian Government’s SkillSelect points test requires at least 65 points for these visa pathways, subject to the applicable requirements.

Victoria ranks ROIs from highest to lowest and issues invitations through competitive and priority industry pathways. A high score does not guarantee an invitation.
