Each year on 8 March, individuals around the globe pause to recognise International Women’s Day. An event intended to mark women’s rights, empowerment, and the continued pursuit of gender equality.

This year in 2025, the theme for International Women’s Day in 2025 is “Accelerate Action”, which calls for collective efforts to speed up progress towards gender equality. In announcing its chosen theme for 2025, the United Nations states: This year’s theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and a feminist future where no one is left behind. Central to this vision is empowering the next generation—youth, particularly young women and adolescent girls—as catalysts for lasting change.

Our Managing Director, Sarah Poole, is beyond excited to join the FICPI Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Intellectuell at end of this month in Madrid. With this in mind, we thought we would do some Googling on innovation and intellectual property that has originated out of Spain over the years.

It goes without say, that Architecture and overall design is a common and highly successful theme. The Spanish are well regarded for their incredible architectural feats across Madrid and Barcelona dating back centuries, as well as the ongoing design work that continues to follow. There is no surprises there! Yet, apparently, the Spanish can also be credited for coining the vast majority of international rules of Chess. Strategic players!

Spanish scientists and inventors have also been leaders in the fielder of research and development in terms of ophthalmology and the leaders in ground breaking cataract surgery, biochemistry and molecular genetics resulting in the ability to read and understand DNA, as well as pioneers in understanding how differing forms of alcohol may be utilised to treat disease during times of great global struggle and significant and wide spread disease of the early centuries.

Sarah looks forward to joining both Spanish colleagues and colleagues from around the world in the upcoming FICPI conference in Madrid. No doubt it will be an absolutely delightful time in a beautiful and welcoming country!

We are delighted to announce that our Managing Director, Sarah Poole, has recently been accepted into the world-renowned International Federation of Intellectual Property Lawyers & Attorneys (FICPI).

Originating put of France as an organisation more than 100 years ago, FICPI is today a global network for IP attorney’s and works not only to connect specialists within the field of intellectual property globally but also woks tirelessly to advocate for positive change within the profession. This includes advocacy work before key bodies such at the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) and United Nations.

We are so very proud of Sarah on this amazing achievement and look forward to supporting her future advocacy on behalf of the FICPI network.

Sarah will commence her appointment by initially attending the World Congress meeting in Madrid, in Spain this coming September.

What is IP Strategy? Now and into the future? IP rights are intended to secure and protect your ability to business in your intended fashion, both now and into the future. Brand Vision v Trade Mark

What is Brand Vision? The question begs and it can mean differing things to differing sectors. Traditionally speaking, Brand Vision could be defined as a directive intended to give a business a sense of directive of brand purpose, in order to distinguish itself from its competitors. Also, to underpin the values of a business and company.

Vision Statements have often been pushed at companies to assist them define themselves, resonate and distinguish themselves as a business and brand and distinguish themselves from competitors. Moreover, to define and implement a roadmap for the future success of a business or company.

So to what extent does this overlap with the role of a trade mark and general IP Strategy? A trade mark is largely legally defined as a ‘badge of origin’ or trade signifier, intended to distinguish one business and its commercial offering from those of others within the marketplace. I.e. in order to sets oneself apart. Ultimately, trade marks are intended to protect the identity that defines a business and position a business to commercially leverage that point of distinction. Can it therefore be said that trade marks are defined to embody, secure and showcase brand vision?

We at IP are intending to challenge this philosophy further in 2024, but introducing guided brand naming where we JV with branding agencies to ensure positive outcomes on both brand visioning and ensuring that businesses are investing in a legal protectable brand name.
