We just had an onshore Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa granted for a carpenter, and construction is one of the areas being prioritised right now.
If you’re a tradie on a temporary visa in Australia, this is a window.
There’s no single path to permanent residency. For some it runs through their employer. For others it’s a skilled visa, the 189, 190 or 491. Before you commit to one, map it with a professional. And if a skills assessment is part of your path, start early, because it takes time.
Timing matters. The next Subclass 189 round is expected around 30 September, and state and territory programs are about to open for the new program year. Last financial year we had construction clients invited at 65 points. With offshore applicants now placed behind onshore under the new skilled priority direction, being onshore and organised counts for a lot.
I’m not promising anyone an invitation or a one-month grant. Every case is different and timeframes change. But the groundwork, you can start today.
In construction? Comment ‘Visa’ and I’ll send you where to start.

Tasmania has just announced its 2026-27 skilled nomination program, but there’s a catch if you’re applying from outside Australia.
The program opens to new Registrations of Interest on 17 August 2026, with 2,050 nomination places (1,250 for the Subclass 190 and 800 for the Subclass 491), and weekly invitations from 20 August.
Here’s what matters if you’re outside Australia: for the whole of 2026-27, Migration Tasmania is not planning any invitations in the Subclass 491 Overseas Skilled Occupation Profiles (Invitation Only) pathway. The reason given is that the Australian Government is prioritising visa processing for applicants already in Australia.
It’s the same onshore-first shift we’ve seen in the family and skilled visa directions this year. If you’re a health or teaching professional and you’ve secured employment with a Tasmanian health provider or school, you may still be eligible for Subclass 190 nomination under the Overseas Applicant – Health or Education Sector Job Offer Pathway.
Follow so you catch the next change.

5 mistakes that get Australian visa applications refused.

Weak evidence. Claiming something is true without the documents to back it up.

Inconsistent details. Names, dates and details that do not match across your paperwork.

Missed deadlines. Home Affairs asks for something and the reply comes late, or never.

The wrong subclass, and failing to declare health, character or history issues. Almost every refusal traces back to one of these, and almost every one is preventable.

The fix is preparation and a careful review before you lodge. Comment Visa and we'll send you a link to speak with a Registered Migration Agent from our team.
