The Australian Government has recently confirmed the annual grant caps for selected Family stream visas for the 2025–26 financial year.

For the 2025–26 financial year, the maximum numbers of visas that may be granted are:
- Contributory Parent visas: 6,800 places
- Parent visas: 1,700 places
- Other Family visas: 500 places

It is important to note that these figures represent the maximum number of visas that may be granted across the full financial year. They do not indicate how many places remain available, nor do they guarantee that pending or newly lodged applications will be finalised within this financial year.

Parent visas remain a long-waiting visa pathway, especially for non-contributory parent visa categories. Applicants and families should plan ahead and understand the expected waiting times, eligibility requirements and potential risks before lodging an application.

MIA has also provided an update on a specific issue affecting some onshore Aged Parent and Contributory Aged Parent visa applicants. This concerns cases where the primary applicant has passed away, and the secondary applicant did not meet the aged requirement at the time the application was lodged.

MIA has raised this issue with the Department and remains in correspondence. While the refusal decisions issued so far have been described as unfair and inconsistent with previously advised policy and practice, they may still be lawful under the current legislation. This means that even if the Department changes its policy or practice going forward, decisions that have already been made may not necessarily be reopened or withdrawn.

For families considering a parent visa pathway, early planning is essential. Although parent visas often involve long waiting times, the overall framework is relatively stable. If you are thinking about bringing your parents to Australia on a longer-term basis, it is best to seek advice early and start preparing as soon as possible.

The Goldfields region in Western Australia is entering an important migration policy transition.

The existing Goldfields Designated Area Migration Agreement (Goldfields DAMA) will officially cease on 30 June 2026 and will be incorporated into the broader Western Australia DAMA (WA DAMA) framework from 1 July 2026.

This change does not mean the end of regional migration opportunities for Goldfields employers. Instead, it represents a more streamlined, state-managed approach designed to improve administrative efficiency, policy consistency and long-term workforce planning.

Key updates for employers include:
✅ WA DAMA endorsement applications open for Goldfields employers from 8 June 2026
✅ Existing labour agreements remain valid until expiry
✅ Goldfields employers with CKB endorsement must ensure their labour agreement is executed by 30 June 2026
✅ At least 50% of WA DAMA places are allocated to regional WA areas, including the Goldfields
✅ WA DAMA endorsement currently has no application fee
✅ Concessions may be available for age, English, work experience and permanent residency pathways

For new employers, registration through the Migration WA portal and participation in the Skilled Migrant Employment Register (SMER) will be required before endorsement can be considered.

This transition provides Goldfields businesses with an opportunity to access a more coordinated migration framework while continuing to address genuine labour shortages across the region.

Employers should review their current workforce needs, sponsorship timelines and compliance obligations as early as possible to avoid delays during the transition period.

With today’s major Subclass 189 invitation round now concluded, the 2025–26 skilled migration year is essentially coming to a close.

Looking at the quota changes for 2026–27, the overall direction is becoming clearer. The Skilled Independent visa pathway has seen a notable increase, while employer-sponsored pathways remain a major focus — particularly Subclass 482 and Subclass 186, which continue to be key options for many applicants.

At the same time, the quota for regional pathways has been significantly reduced, suggesting that the new financial year may place greater emphasis on highly skilled applicants, in-demand occupations, and genuine employer needs.

In simple terms, skilled migration opportunities are still there, but the pathways are becoming more targeted:
- Subclass 189 remains important for applicants with competitive points and strong occupation alignment.
- Subclass 482 and Subclass 186 are still the main pathways for applicants with employer support, relevant work experience, and a clear long-term career plan.
- State nomination may still offer opportunities, but applicants will need to pay closer attention to state occupation lists, invitation patterns, and local labour market priorities.

For anyone planning to apply or progress their migration journey in the 2026–27 financial year, now is the time to reassess your occupation, points, English score, work experience, and employer-sponsored options. Early planning will be far more valuable than simply waiting for the next round.

The Australian Association of Social Workers, AASW, has recently updated its English language requirements. In addition to the existing IELTS options, AASW now accepts IELTS Academic One Skill Retake.

This means applicants may meet the English requirement if they achieve 7.0 in three components in one IELTS Academic test, with only one component below 7.0 but not below 6.5. The applicant can then retake that single component and achieve 7.0.

The previous two options still apply:
Option 1️⃣
Achieve 7.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in one IELTS Academic test.

Option2️⃣
Combine two IELTS Academic test results within six months to achieve 7.0 in all four components, with no individual component below 6.5 in either test.

Validity period❗❗
- In general, AASW accepts English test results within 3️⃣ years.
- However, if applicants use IELTS One Skill Retake to meet the requirement, the One Skill Retake result must be used within 1️⃣2️⃣months.
- The One Skill Retake must also be completed within 6️⃣0️⃣days of the original IELTS Academic test date.

This update provides a more flexible option for applicants who are only short in one IELTS component and may reduce the need to retake the full IELTS test.

From 1 June 2026, most student visa refusal reviews at the ART will generally be reviewed on the papers.

This means the ART may decide the case based on written submissions and evidence, without holding a hearing.

Applicants should not assume they will have a chance to explain their case in person.

From 18 May 2026, the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) has commenced a new “on the papers” review process for certain temporary visa review matters.

This means some cases may be decided without an oral hearing. Instead, the ART may make a decision based on written submissions, evidence and responses provided by the applicant.

What does this mean? 👀

Applicants may not always have the opportunity to attend a hearing and explain their case in person.

The ART may decide the review based on documents such as the visa application, refusal decision, written submissions, supporting evidence, personal statements and responses to ART requests.

This makes written materials much more important.

Who may be affected? 👀

The new process applies to certain temporary visa decisions prescribed in the Migration Regulations 1994.

It does not apply to all ART matters. Permanent visa and protection visa matters are not affected by this specific change.

Student visa refusal reviews are expected to be among the first matters affected, so student visa applicants should pay close attention.

Why is this important? 👀

Applicants should not assume they can explain everything later at a hearing.

If the case is reviewed “on the papers”, written submissions and evidence may become the main basis for the ART’s decision.

It is important to address the refusal reasons clearly, provide relevant evidence and respond to ART requests before the deadline.

If an applicant fails to respond to an ART request, the review application may be dismissed.

Migration Tasmania has confirmed that ROIs for all pathways and pass levels under the 2025–26 Tasmanian Skilled Migration State Nomination Program will close at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.

The final invitation round for this program year will take place on Thursday, 4 June 2026.

Due to strong demand and limited remaining nomination places, not all approved applicants may receive nomination within the 2025–26 program year. If the current allocation is used, approved applications may be nominated after Tasmania receives its 2026–27 allocation.

ROIs that are not invited before the end of the program year will remain in the Application Gateway for six months and may be considered again once the 2026–27 program opens.

AMS recommends eligible applicants review their options promptly and lodge any required ROI or nomination application as soon as possible.
