From 2 October 2026, new rules affect Student visa (subclass 500) applications, particularly for people applying from within Australia and those wanting to include family members.

Most temporary visa holders can no longer apply for a Student visa while in Australia, and new restrictions apply to including family members.

If you already hold a Student visa, your current visa is not affected.

Some exemptions apply, so it’s important to understand how the new rules may apply to your circumstances.

Working towards PR in Australia? Your occupation could be worth a closer look.

Australia’s updated skilled visa processing priorities include healthcare, construction, education, resources, agriculture, aquaculture and fishing, along with occupations related to law enforcement and defence.

But what does that mean for you?

Priority processing doesn’t automatically make you eligible for a visa or guarantee PR. Your occupation, qualifications, experience and English level still matter, as do the requirements of your chosen pathway.

Australia’s migration system is changing and several visa categories could be affected.

On 17 September 2026, the Government has announced proposed changes involving:

💠 Student visas and secondary applicants
💠 Visitor visas and “No Further Stay” conditions
💠 Second and third Working Holiday visas
💠 Skilled migration and priority sectors

⚠️ Important: Not all of these changes are in effect yet. They are expected to be introduced progressively, and the final details and commencement dates will matter.

Migration rules can change quickly, so staying informed is key.

6 WAYS YOU COULD GET AUSTRALIAN PR

There’s no single pathway to Australian permanent residency. The right option depends on your skills, work experience, location, employer and personal circumstances.

Here are six pathways that may be worth exploring:

189 – Skilled Independent

Have skilled work experience and enough points? You may be able to apply without state or employer sponsorship.

190 – Skilled Nominated

If an Australian state or territory needs your skills, you may be eligible for nomination and a pathway to PR.

491 → 191

Open to living and working in regional Australia? This could lead to permanent residency if you meet the requirements.

482 → 186

If an eligible employer wants to sponsor you, you may be able to start on a temporary visa and later transition to PR.

494 → 191

Have a job opportunity with an eligible regional employer? This pathway could also lead to permanent residency.

Partner Visa Pathway

If your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you may be able to apply based on your genuine relationship.
