Australia’s 2026–27 Federal Budget sends an important signal for migration policy.
The Permanent Migration Program will remain at 185,000 places, with more than 70% allocated to the Skill stream.
One of the key points is the continued focus on onshore applicants — people who are already in Australia and may already be studying, working, contributing to the economy, or living with family here.
This may be relevant for people currently on:
• Student visas
• Temporary Graduate visas
• Skilled temporary visas
• Partner or family pathways
• Bridging visas
• Other temporary visas
The Budget also points to:
• Reform of the points test
• Greater scrutiny of student visa applications
• Improved skills assessment pathways for priority trades
• A stronger focus on migration system integrity
The broader message is clear: Australia is continuing to support skilled migration, but the system is becoming more selective and evidence-based.
For people already in Australia, staying informed and understanding the policy direction will be increasingly important.
