The next Subclass 189 round is almost here.

Your points are assessed at the time of invitation, so every claim in your EOI needs to be accurate and backed by evidence on that day. Claiming points you can’t support can lead to a refusal.

It’s also a good time to check that your EOI hasn’t expired, and to start gathering documents and certificates, which can take weeks to arrive.

Is getting a 482 approved as a Retail Manager hard? 🤔

It's one of the most refused occupations. Here's what got our client's nomination approved last week:

1️⃣ An organisation chart with our client as Retail Manager at the top (no directors working in the business)
2️⃣ A genuine position report showing everything they do each week: rostering staff, rotating stock, managing suppliers
3️⃣ A submission showing how the company can afford the nominee's wages

189 invitation round confirmed for 15 October 2026 📅

3 things to check before the round, from an immigration lawyer:

1️⃣ Make sure your skills assessment is eligible for the 189. If it is, tick the 189 in your EOI.
2️⃣ Claim every point you’re entitled to: English test, NAATI, work experience.
3️⃣ Check nothing is expiring. Your skills assessment and English test both need to be valid for your EOI to stay eligible.

407 nomination refused? Don't wait for the visa refusal ⏳

Once the nomination is refused, the 407 visa usually follows within about 14 days. Here's what you can do before that:

1️⃣ Ask your employer if they'll sponsor you on a 482
2️⃣ Start labour market testing straight away
3️⃣ Consider withdrawing the 407 before it's refused (that leaves you 35 days in Australia)
4️⃣ When LMT closes, sign a new contract and lodge the 482
5️⃣ Lodge a Bridging visa B before your BVC kicks in, to keep your work rights

Is the ART just dismissing student visa appeals? 👀

Since 1 June 2026, most student visa refusal reviews at the Administrative Review Tribunal are decided without a hearing, on written submissions only.

That means one letter decides your case: the invitation to comment. Miss the deadline and your review can be dismissed. Then the clock starts on how long you have left in Australia ⏳

Watch to the end for what to do, and the one option you may still have if it's already been dismissed.

On a 485? The new rules from 2 October 2026 change your options.

What you need to know:

1️⃣ You can still add your partner to your 485 application as a dependent. The Minister announced this would change for graduate visas, but it wasn't in the 2 October changes. Want to add your partner? Do it now.

2️⃣ Planning to move onto your partner's Student visa as a dependent once your 485 expires? You can no longer do that.

3️⃣ Thinking of going offshore, applying for a Student visa and coming back? Not anymore. You must apply from outside Australia and stay outside until the visa is granted.

On a 485 right now? Plan your next step before your visa runs out, because it's going to be much harder than it used to be.
