Human Rights Day …..In a time of rising hate, vilification and discrimination....
What did they say....?
In a time of rising hate, vilification and discrimination in our society, the Summit brought together more than 100 leaders from across Victoria’s diverse communities. The Summit was addressed by the Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Jacinta Allan, and Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner, Ro Allen. The Attorney General of Victoria, the Hon. Sonya Kilkenny, Sheena Watt MP, and Victoria Police Chief Commissioner, Mike Bush attended the Summit.
Along with Dr Diana Cousens we represented the Buddhist Counsel of Victoria.
On Human Rights Day 2025, Victoria’s Anti-Hate Summit affirmed that we are stronger together.

The Buddhist Council of Victoria condemns and expresses its sincere condolences to the families, loved ones, and communities affected by this brutal massacre targeted at the Jewish community celebrating the first day of Hanukkah, which took place at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, over recent hours.
Teachings and mindsets, religious or otherwise, that promote hatred and heinous violence, whether domestic or international, must be pursued and disrupted without hesitation to prevent such harm in the future. We urge the Federal, State, and Territory Governments of Australia to take immediate and decisive action to ensure all necessary resources are deployed to identify those responsible, prevent further cowardly attacks, dismantle their networks, and cut off their funding.
Australia must remain a nation where people can move about without fear, intimidation, or terror.
This tragedy reminds us of the fragility and impermanence of life, a truth at the heart of the Buddha’s teachings. As the Dhammapada reminds us:
“Arise! Be mindful! Train yourself with diligence. The wise say life is uncertain — do not delay in awakening.”
In honouring those we have lost, let us reflect deeply, live mindfully, and offer kindness and compassion to all beings.
May all beings be safe. May all beings be free from suffering.

⚖️On this International Human Rights Day on the request of the Human Rights Commissioner Ro Allen I was able facilitate in arranging the meditation session at the Summit. We are fortunate to have Venerable Pasadika Thero from the Buddhist Council of Victoria to lead a morning meditation fostering peace, harmony and openness. Guests were encouraged by the Commission to join the activity to start their day with some quiet reflection. On the left is Venerable Pasadika Thero and in the middle is the Human Rights Commissioner.

We welcome City of Casey elected councillors calling on Environment Protection Authority Victoria to reopen their consultation on the development license application from Veolia and proposed waste transfer station at Hampton Park.

The community needs a genuine opportunity to be informed, to respond and be heard on this important issue.

In addition to our submission to the EPA consultation, the CRRA has been working closely with the Lynbrook Residents Association supporting their advocacy efforts and we have also written to:
- the City of Casey calling on them to review the planning permit issued to Veolia: and - Victorian Minister for Environment, Steve Dimopoulos and Victorian Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny to ask their support for further consultation from EPA Victoria.
We will keep our members and residents updated on further developments.
