Today, we brought our team together for a special morning to mark National Reconciliation Week. This year’s theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility and calls on all of us to act.

Our guest speaker, Tekan Cochrane, Executive Officer of Tarwirri and a proud Kooma and Yuwaalaraay woman with Torres Strait Islander heritage, shared insights into Tarwirri’s work to support First Nations legal professionals. Tekan also spoke about highlights from the recent Blak Letter Law Gala, which celebrates the achievements and contributions of First Nations' peoples in the legal sector.

We also shared an update on the progress of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which is moving towards final approval with Reconciliation Australia. Thank you to Auntie Fay for the powerful original artwork featured in the new RAP design and the RAP working group, including Alison, Maresa, and Nadia (pictured) for their hard work and dedication.

Recent RAP initiatives include:

▶️ Launching new cultural capability training for staff
▶️ Continuing a strong partnership with Tarwirri
▶️ Making submissions on youth justice, child protection, youth detention, bail reform and other crucial areas affecting First Nations' peoples
▶️ Reviewing internal policies and processes to ensure they align with RAP objectives

National Reconciliation Week runs until 3 June, so there is still plenty of time to learn more, get involved and attend local events. Here are some resources:

The LIV's Elder Law Committee and Succession Law Committee have drafted a new resource, developed in collaboration with COTA Victoria and Seniors Rights Victoria. The resource, titled "A Guide: Your Decision-Making Rights as You Age", explains older people's decision-making rights and explores important concepts such as capacity and substitute decision-making.

The Victorian Justice Leaders AI Forum, convened by the Law Institute of Victora in collaboration with the Victorian Attorney-General, yesterday brought together more than 130 justice sector leaders to identify priority actions on AI, with a focus on improving access to justice, delivering economic benefits to Victoria and maintaining trust in the legal system. Attendees included heads of jurisdiction from state and federal courts, regulators, leaders of law firms, and leaders from government and regulatory authorities.

Participants discussed practical and policy responses to some of the most pressing issues emerging as AI adoption accelerates, including governance, accountability, capability-building, investment, safeguards, responsible use, the implications for legal education and training and opportunities to improve efficiency and justice outcomes for the Victorian community.

The Forum heard from the Honourable Chief Justice Richard Niall of the Supreme Court of Victoria and the Honourable Sonya Kilkenny MP, Attorney General for Victoria, about their focus areas and priorities for AI across the sector and the courts.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is "All In". This year’s theme invites every Australian to play a part in reconciliation, every day. At the LIV, we recognise that reconciliation involves effort from everyone. Progress can only happen when we move beyond words and work together for change.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have often led the way, but reconciliation is a shared journey. The 25th anniversary of Reconciliation Australia offers a timely moment for reflection and action across the legal profession and our wider community.

The theme "All In" encourages us to approach this challenge not with guilt or blame, but with a shared sense of responsibility and respect.

The LIV is a proud supporter of the 2026 Tarwirri Blak Letter Law Gala, which took place on 23 May. The event, hosted by Shelley Ware, recognises the achievements and leadership of First Nations lawyers, students and community members.

The evening's highlights included the thought provoking keynote address by the Honourable Justice Lincoln Crowley of the Supreme Court of Queensland and memorable performances by Djarlo dance troupe and singer-storyteller Mitch Tambo.

We deeply value our partnership with Tarwirri, Executive Officer Tekan Cochrane and President Andrew Williams, and their leadership in bringing the legal community together.

🎙️ "Reputations are won and lost, often, on how you respond."

In this episode of Cross-Examined, leading cyber incident response lawyer Cameron Whittfield takes us inside the first chaotic hours after a breach and explains what law firms should expect when the proverbial bits hit the fan.

We unpack what actually happens in the first 48 hours after a cyber incident, why early decisions on communications, privilege and people matter for years and how firms can protect client trust and their reputation during the fallout.

Cyber incidents are no longer a question of if, but when. The difference between lasting damage and recovery often comes down to preparation and response.
