The VPT assesses applicants across seven factors: Age, English proficiency, Skilled Work Experience, Education, Occupation Skill Level, Partner Skills and Annual Earnings in Victoria.

STUDENT VISA REFORMS 2026 – PARTS 2 & 3

🚨 IMPORTANT CHANGES TO ONSHORE STUDENT VISA APPLICATIONS!

✅ PART 2 – WHO CAN STILL APPLY ONSHORE?

Current Student visa holders may be eligible to apply for another Student visa in Australia if they:

✔️ Need up to 12 additional months to complete their course with the same provider.

✔️ Progress to a higher AQF-level qualification (conditions apply).

✔️ Apply for PhD or school studies.

✔️ Are sponsored by DFAT or Defence.

✔️ Meet specified AQF/non-AQF progression exemptions.

✔️ Are affected by education provider default.

🚫 PART 3 – 28-DAY RULE REMOVED!

Former Student visa holders can no longer rely on the previous 28-day provision to lodge another Student or Student Guardian visa application onshore after their substantive visa has ceased.

MAJOR AUSTRALIAN STUDENT VISA CHANGES – FROM 2 OCTOBER 2026

Important changes to Australia’s Subclass 500 Student visa rules have commenced.

🔹 Further Student visas
If you already hold a Subclass 500 Student visa and want to apply for another Student visa as the primary applicant, you will generally need to apply from outside Australia, unless an exception applies.

🔹 Other temporary visa holders
People holding certain visas—including 485, 482, 407, 408, 417, 462 and Visitor visas—are also prevented from lodging a Student visa application while in Australia under the new rules.

🔹 There are important exceptions
Some existing Student visa holders may still be able to lodge another Student visa onshore, including eligible:

🎓 Doctoral (PhD) students
🏫 Students affected by provider default
📚 Students needing additional time to complete their principal course
📈 Students progressing to an eligible higher-level course

🔹 Family members
The rules for secondary applicants have also become more restrictive, although specific exceptions apply in certain circumstances.

NORTHERN TERRITORY NOMINATION UPDATE 2026–27

Exciting news for skilled migrants! The Northern Territory nomination portal opened on 21 August 2026 for all onshore streams and selected offshore streams.

📌 2026–27 NT Allocation:
🔹 1,850 total nominations
🔹 850 places – Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
🔹 1,000 places – Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491)
🔹 200 more places than the 2025–26 allocation

⚠️ Eligibility requirements and nomination pathways have also been updated for the new program year.

Tasmania Skilled Migration Update 2026–27!

Tasmania’s Skilled Migration State Nomination Program is reopening, with ROIs opening 17 August 2026 and weekly invitations commencing 20 August 2026.

Key updates include revised Subclass 190/491 pathways, new income and Gold Priority requirements, greater priority for Tasmanian graduates, and updated employment and evidence rules.
