Community day as Sunbury Road Upgrade takes shape

Locals lapped up glimpses of summer sunshine during a huge community thank you day to celebrate the soon to be completed Sunbury Road Upgrade - making the road safer and smoother for the more than 25,000 drivers who use it every day.

Member of Sunbury Josh Bull joined hundreds of people at Tulsa Drive Reserve at Goonawarra, to mark the closing stages of works of Sunbury’s biggest road infrastructure project.

The event gave people from all sides of Sunbury an opportunity to come together for the project team to say thank you to the community for their patience during construction.

Designed to have all-ages appeal, plenty of activity was on offer including live entertainment, giveaways, a free sausage sizzle and more.

The first contracts for the 2 biggest freeway overhauls in the state’s history have been signed, with major upgrades to the Eastern Freeway and M80 Ring Road to start next year.

The freeway upgrades and 6.5km North East Link tunnels will cut travel times by 35 minutes in the north east, taking 15,000 trucks off local roads a day, and creating 12,000 jobs across these 3 massive projects.

Through 6 years of detailed design and planning work, significant additional scope has been added to North East Link in response to community feedback – including a longer tunnel, a major upgrade of the M80 Ring Road at Greensborough, better interchanges and more public open space, all of which will create thousands more jobs.

Work on Victoria’s Big Build is gearing up this summer on the road and rail network, as major projects take a step closer to completion and milestones are reached on the West Gate Tunnel Project, North East Link, and level crossing removals.

There will also be a focus on rail maintenance and major rail projects in regional Victoria over the summer months.
