Recently, the Wakerley Legal team stepped out of the office for a planning and training day - reviewing our year, sharpening our goals, and investing in the skills that keep us delivering for our clients.
Great legal work is built on great teamwork. We're lucky to have both. We rounded out the day with a well-earned team dinner, and we're heading into the next stretch energised and ready to go. 💪

QLD Organ Donation Changes: Does Your Will Reflect Your Final Wishes?

Queensland is considering reintroducing organ donation prompts on driver licences - something some of us remember from years ago.

But here's what's easy to miss: your licence marker has never been legally binding. The recognised consent comes from the Australian Organ Donor Register, and just as importantly, from your family knowing your wishes.

And it doesn't stop there. A Will captures what you want after you're gone, but what about while you're still here? An Advance Health Directive lets you set out your medical wishes in advance, so that if something unexpected happens and you can't speak for yourself, the people around you and the medical team treating you already know what you want. No guesswork. No difficult decisions left to your family in an already overwhelming moment.

This kind of news is always a good prompt to ask yourself - is my Will up to date? Do I have an Advance Health Directive in place? And do my loved ones actually know what I want?

At Wakerley Legal, we help Queenslanders get the right documents in place - from Wills to Advance Health Directives and full estate planning that reflects who you are and what you want.

We've written a short article breaking down what the proposed changes mean and why now is a good time to review your arrangements. Head to the link to read more.

Signed a contract and just bought a property? Did you know you might still be able to walk away.

In Queensland, signing a residential property contract doesn’t always mean the deal is final. In many cases, buyers are protected by a 5 business day cooling-off period, giving them time to reconsider and, if needed, terminate the contract after signing.

This can be especially important if unexpected issues arise and no conditions or special conditions were included in the Contract, or simply realising the contract isn’t right for your circumstances.

Cooling-off rights are time-sensitive, and there may be a 'termination penalty' payable, so getting legal advice quickly is essential.

At Wakerley Legal, our experienced property team can explain your rights, review your contract, and help you make informed decisions before the cooling-off period ends.

If you’ve signed a contract and need advice, contact Wakerley Legal today. Call us on (07) 5443 9600

Just had a baby? Congratulations! Amid all the excitement, here's why your Will is now urgent.

Welcoming a new baby comes with a lot of important decisions, but many people forget that their Will should be one of them.

A current Will allows you to legally record your wishes, including who you would want to care for your child, should something unexpected happen. Without a Will, your spouse may not receive your whole estate and it may be shared with your new child. Putting the right plans in place now can give you peace of mind that your family is protected for the future. Our team is here to guide you through life's transitions with ease, expertise and confidence.

If your family has recently grown, Wakerley Legal can help you update your will and make sure everything is in place when it matters most.

Over 80 Sunshine Coast locals took a proactive step toward protecting their future last month.

From March 16-26, our Director Trent visited seven library locations across the coast, hosting free workshops on a topic many people don’t realise they need to think about… their super.

Across the sessions, we covered:
• How super is treated under Queensland law
• How to align your Will and super
• Practical ways to protect your loved ones

The key message?
You can control where your super ends up, but only if you’ve got the right structures in place.

Simple actions can make all the difference:
✔ Check your nomination
✔ Check the expiry
✔ Make sure it aligns with your Will

Thanks to everyone who joined us - we loved being part of such an engaged community!

Missed out or not sure where you stand? Get in touch with our team today.

Being connected to the local legal community helps us better serve our clients.

In 2024 Trent was made a life member of the Sunshine Coast Law Association (SCLA), having served in various committee roles including President, Vice President, and Secretary over many years. The SCLA supports the local legal community through professional development, events, and initiatives that help lawyers stay up to date with best practice and important local issues.

Our team regularly attends SCLA events, staying connected with other legal professionals and keeping a close eye on developments that shape the Sunshine Coast community. This involvement ensures we provide advice that is practical, informed, and tailored to the needs of our clients.

Through partnerships with organisations like SCLA, we bring expertise, insight, and local awareness directly to the people and families we support. It’s a privilege to work in, and for, the community we call home.
