Last Friday, the Axia Litigation Lawyers team had the privilege of attending the Surf for Kids Legends Lunch on the Sunshine Coast

It was an incredible afternoon, with the local community coming together to raise much-needed funds for children and families facing hardship due to disabilities and mental health challenges.

We were proud to play a small part in the day, with our Managing Director, Adam Brown, running the Heads or Tails competition for a bottle of Chivas Regal — helping raise $3,500 toward an incredible overall result of almost $90,000 raised together on the day.

Events like this are a powerful reminder of what makes the Sunshine Coast community so special. When local people and businesses come together behind a cause like this, the impact can be significant.

A big thank you to Surf For Kids for the important work they do supporting local families, and for allowing us to be involved in such a meaningful event.

ATO CRACKDOWN 2026 (QLD): what small businesses need to know — now.

We’re seeing the ATO move hard on overdue BAS, PAYG and super — including tools that can hit without a court hearing, like garnishee notices and Director Penalty Notices (DPNs).

If you’re a director or running a small business, this matters because one move can trigger a fast domino effect: cashflow freeze → missed payments → statutory demands → insolvency risk.

In this article written by our Associate Lawyer Sam Nelson, we’ve broken down:

✅ The ATO’s main enforcement tools (and what they mean in real life)
✅ When directors can become personally liable
✅ A practical 72-hour checklist if you’ve received ATO correspondence
✅ Rescue options to discuss with your advisers

Can you contract as head contractor without a QBCC licence in Queensland?

It’s a common question in commercial construction — and the answer can be “yes”, but only in limited circumstances and with strict compliance.

Our Special Counsel, Shane Ulyatt, has published a plain-English breakdown of when it may be lawful, what can cause the exemption to fall away, and the key risks to watch (licence checks, scope changes, WHS and insurance).

Proud to see Sammy-Lee Brown featured in Queensland Law Society's Proctor today, sharing her journey from dual Muay Thai and kickboxing world champion to litigation lawyer at Axia Litigation Lawyers.

What makes Sammy’s story so compelling is how clearly the same fundamentals apply in both worlds. As she puts it, the carryover isn’t about being “tough” — it’s about mindset: discipline, focus, resilience, and trusting the team in your corner.

Our Managing Director Adam Brown said Sammy’s achievements are impressive, but it’s the mindset behind them that stands out — qualities that align strongly with what Axia stands for. He also highlighted that she’s the kind of person who lifts the people around her, and will be a real asset to both our team culture and our clients.

We’re lucky to have Sammy-Lee on the team, and we love seeing her story shared with the profession.

The stress of running a business experiencing financial turmoil can be overwhelming. It doesn’t just affect the company — it takes a toll on the people behind it. The weight of insolvency or liquidation often bears heavily on owners, directors, and their families.

What many don’t realise is that there can be alternatives to liquidation. One such option is a Deed of Company Arrangement (DOCA) — a pathway that may allow businesses to restructure, continue trading, and deliver a better outcome for creditors.

With more than 20 years of litigation experience, our Managing Director Adam Brown shares practical insights into how a DOCA works and the steps that can improve the chances of approval.

🏠 Think you’re safe after bankruptcy discharge? Think again.

A recent Sunshine Coast case left one man blindsided — years after his wife’s bankruptcy ended, a trustee came knocking for half the equity in their home.

How is that even possible?
Why was the claim legal?
Could it happen to you?

We break it all down in our latest article, written by our Managing Director, Adam Brown — including the critical mistake that turned into a $60,000 shock.
