💰 Financial Literacy Check-In

✔️ Do you know what bank accounts are in your name?
✔️ Are you aware of any debts you owe and have a plan to repay them?
✔️ Do you have a strategy for everyday savings and your retirement?
✔️ Do you have financial independence, or a trusted support network to help you get there?

Financial literacy is at the heart of empowerment. Understanding your financial position, knowing what you own, what you owe, and what your options are, gives you the confidence to make informed decisions about your future. For some women, financial literacy can mean the difference between remaining in a financially abusive relationship and having the knowledge and confidence to take steps towards independence.

When you leave the house, don't leave your memories!

Your family and friends can be your biggest source of strength during a family law matter. 🩷

Their support, encouragement and a listening ear can make all the difference.

But when it comes to legal advice, leave that to a qualified family lawyer.

Every family law matter is unique. Well-meaning advice from someone who has "been through it" or "knows someone who has" may not apply to your circumstances and could unintentionally lead you in the wrong direction.

Lean on your loved ones for emotional support. Lean on your lawyer for legal guidance.

Power and Control

Domestic and family violence is not defined by a single incident. More often, it is a pattern of behaviour designed to gain and maintain power and control over another person.

This pattern may include:
🔹 Coercive control
🔹 Financial or economic abuse
🔹 Emotional and psychological abuse
🔹 Isolation from family and friends
🔹 Technology-facilitated abuse
🔹 Threats, intimidation and surveillance
🔹 Physical or sexual violence

While physical violence is often the most visible form of abuse, it is frequently the ongoing pattern of coercion, manipulation and control that causes the deepest and most enduring harm.

Understanding these dynamics is essential for lawyers, support workers and the broader community. Recognising the pattern—not just isolated incidents—can fundamentally change how we identify risk, respond to victim-survivors and promote safer outcomes.

As explored in Domestic and Family Violence Law in Australia, co-authored by our Director Joplin Higgins, effective responses to domestic and family violence require an understanding of the complex dynamics of power, control and coercive behaviour—not simply the physical acts of violence.

STOP FOR A MINUTE.

Take a breath.

Be proud of yourself for how far you've come.

Wherever you are in your journey, give yourself credit. You've made it through every difficult day so far, and that deserves recognition.

Selfcare.

Concentrate on the things that nourish your mind, body, and soul, not the things that constantly drain your energy.

Choose rest without guilt. Set healthy boundaries. Protect your peace. Prioritise the people, habits, and moments that help you thrive.

You can't pour from an empty cup. 🌿✨

"Do you have experience with coercive control?"

It's a question we hear often.

The answer is simple: our Director, Joplin Higgins, co-authored one of Australia's leading legal texts on domestic and family violence.

The book provides comprehensive guidance on domestic and family violence, including coercive control, financial abuse, technological abuse and family law proceedings.

At Joplin Lawyers, we don't just practise in this area—we contribute to the legal understanding and development of it. Our team has extensive experience assisting clients affected by coercive and controlling behaviours and understands the complex dynamics that often underpin these matters.
