When is a business day not a Business Day?

Did you know, that under the REIQ standard terms of contract, the period between 27 December and 31 December (inclusive) is NOT counted as business day?
This means that if you have a condition or settlement due on these days, usually that due date will 'roll over' to the next "Business Day"!

But be careful! Because some 'creatures of statute' do NOT operate by power of the contract, and in those cases, the 'business days' DO count! Not sure? Check in with your lawyer or conveyancer to get specific legal advice for your circumstances!

Cuppa for Dementia 2025

Lawson Lawyers recently had the privilege of speaking at a Cuppa for Dementia session at a local retirement village. The focus was on building dementia-friendly communities and supporting those who care for a loved one with dementia.

From a legal perspective, we spoke about the importance of putting plans in place now, and including safeguards in our Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPAs), as well as keeping estate planning up-to-date.

It was such a meaningful morning — connecting with the local community and helping people think about planning in a practical, personal way. Sometimes, the best gift we can give our family is a well-thought-out estate plan, so the burden of decision-making is as light as possible when we can no longer care for ourselves.

If you own a firearm, take a moment to check your storage and think about what will happen to it in the future.
It’s easy to include your registered fi****ms in your will to help your loved ones avoid extra stress later on.
Don’t forget, you can hand in any unwanted fi****ms at your local police station without penalty under the Permanent National Fi****ms Amnesty.
