Scams on the Rise: What You Need to Know to Protect Yourself

Scams Awareness Week is a timely reminder that cybercrime is more prevalent than ever. 🛑

Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, particularly with the assistance of AI, and unfortunately, no one is immune. From fake SMS messages and phishing emails to fraudulent phone calls and identity theft, scam tactics are constantly evolving and the consequences can be devastating.

Scammers may try to lure you into a range of scams, including inheritance, romance, investment and recovery scams, just to name a few.

A few things worth remembering:
🔹 Stop and think before clicking. Never click on links in unexpected text messages or emails, even if they appear to come from someone you trust. Verify the message through official channels.
🔹 Be cautious of unexpected calls. If someone claims to be from your bank, a government agency or a legal firm and asks for personal information or payment, hang up and contact the organisation using a number you know is legitimate.
🔹 Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, stop, check and protect yourself before taking any action.

Knowledge is one of the best defences against scams. Be sure to read the latest article by Emily Kynaston to learn more about the types of scams currently circulating and how you can protect yourself.

Independent Contractor or Employee? Getting the classification right matters.

For many businesses, engaging contractors can provide flexibility and access to specialist skills. But simply calling someone a “contractor”, having them invoice the business or having an ABN does not necessarily make them an independent contractor.

The true nature of the working relationship is what matters and getting it wrong can lead to significant liabilities, including unpaid entitlements, superannuation, tax obligations and potential penalties.

With modern work arrangements becoming increasingly flexible, it’s important to regularly review your contractor arrangements and make sure they reflect the reality of the relationship.

👉 Not sure whether your worker is an employee or independent contractor? Our experienced team can help.

For many businesses, engaging independent contractors can appear to be a flexible and cost-effective way to access labour, skills and specialist services. However, incorrectly classifying a worker as an “independent contractor” when they are, in substance, an employee can expose a business to si...
