The 2026 Annual Wage Review Decision is out — and minimum wages are increasing.

The Fair Work Commission’s Expert Panel has announced that Modern Award wage rates will increase by 4.75% from 1 July 2026, with further adjustments applying to some of the lowest-paid classifications.

The National Minimum Wage will also increase to $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week from 1 July 2026.

For employers, now is the time to review payroll and remuneration arrangements to ensure employees are being paid correctly under the applicable Modern Award, enterprise agreement or National Minimum Wage.

Underpayments can occur even where an employee is covered by an enterprise agreement, so it is important to check the new rates carefully before they take effect.

CAREER PATHWAYS IN LAW ⚖️

Last week we went ‘back to school’ (please don’t ask us how long it’s been!).

Our team spent a wonderful evening at Holy Spirit College Mackay chatting with students and their parents about the many exciting career opportunities available in the legal industry.

Often, people assume the only pathway into law is through university. While becoming a solicitor is an incredibly rewarding option for many, we also wanted to highlight another important and valuable pathway – becoming a Paralegal.

For many young people, this pathway begins in administrative and legal support roles, often as their very first full-time position straight out of high school. From there, they gain hands-on experience, develop practical skills and build rewarding long-term careers within the legal profession.

At McKays, we’re passionate about supporting local students and helping them understand the different opportunities available within our industry, whether that’s through university, vocational training or learning on the job.

It was incredibly inspiring to hear students speak about their future goals, subject choices and ambitions. The future looks bright, and we look forward to continuing to support the next generation of legal professionals in our region.

The Secret is Out! – Welcome Ali Ladd

We’ve got a new addition…in the Whitsundays!

McKays Solicitors is overjoyed to welcome Senior Associate, Ali Ladd, to our Commercial Team.

Ali is a very experienced senior commercial lawyer who brings significant experience across business and commercial conveyancing, property and rural transactions, leasing, share sales, structuring, corporate law, commercial agreements and contracts, wills and estates, trusts, partnerships, franchising and general commercial matters, strengthening McKays’ ability to deliver high-quality, commercially focused legal advice to clients in the region.

As a local of Airlie Beach, Ali has practiced in the Whitsundays for a number of years and been a longstanding member of the community since 2009. Ali is excited to continue to be able to provide exceptional legal advice and a high level of service to those across the region, including Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Proserpine, Bowen and Collinsville without the need for travel – backed by the size, strength, resources and expertise of one of Queensland’s largest regional legal practices.

For those who know Ali, you’ll already be familiar with her passionate but down to earth, pragmatic and solutions-driven approach. She works closely with her clients to understand their objectives, identify risks early and deliver clear, commercially savvy advice that drives outcomes.

When Ali is not at work, you may see her around Airlie Beach running, at the gym, sailing or renovating with her builder partner.

Ali is excited to join forces with Senior Associate and Family Lawyer, Elizabeth Smith, as we expand and strengthen the McKays’ presence in the Whitsundays.

We are excited to have someone of Ali’s calibre join our team and look forward to watching her continue to contribute to the success of clients across the greater Whitsunday region.

✨ Celebrating Sabine Scott – Associate ✨

We are excited to share that Sabine Scott has been promoted to Associate at McKays.

Since joining our Criminal Law team, Sabine has made a significant impact through her strong work ethic, technical ability, and commitment to achieving the best outcomes for her clients.

Before stepping into her role as a solicitor, Sabine spent 24 years in the Queensland Police Service, including nearly two decades as a Police Prosecutor, 10 of which as Officer in Charge of Police Prosecutions. That experience is something she now brings to every matter she handles, giving her clients a level of insight and understanding that is truly invaluable.

Sabine supports clients across both private and Legal Aid matters in Court, undertakes Duty Lawyer work in Mackay, and travels to Moranbah to ensure regional communities have access to quality legal representation.

She is hardworking, compassionate, and deeply committed to achieving the best outcomes for her clients, many of whom are going through some of the most difficult times in their lives. She takes the time to listen, to explain, and to support, all while advocating strongly on their behalf.

Within McKays, Sabine is a trusted colleague and a generous mentor, always willing to share her knowledge and lift those around her.

And outside of work, she continues to give back through her volunteer work with the RSPCA, something that speaks volumes about her character.

Sabine, your promotion is so well deserved. We are lucky to have you as part of the McKays team, and we can’t wait to see what’s ahead.

👏 Congratulations Sabine!

CANEGROWERS MACKAY CENTENARY GALA 🌾

Commercial and Rural Lawyer, Erin Gibson, had the pleasure of attending the Canegrowers Mackay 100-Year Centenary Gala last week.

The evening brought together people from across the sugar industry to celebrate the many individuals who have contributed to the organisation over the past century, as well as those who have supported and benefited from its work.

For Erin, the night was especially meaningful. Growing up in a cane farming family, with her parents being third-generation cane farmers in the region, the event brought back wonderful memories and highlighted the deep connection many local families have with the industry.

Congratulations to Canegrowers Mackay on reaching 100 years of supporting local growers.

IWD 2026 – Proud Sponsors

We were very proud to sponsor the 2026 Resource Industry Network’s International Women’s Day Business Lunch!

McKays has a long history of supporting the local mining and resources industries, and today, sitting in a room with nearly 600 people at a sold-out event, we were reminded just how fortunate our region is.

Looking around at the incredibly talented and hardworking people, who give so much to both the industry and our community, was truly inspiring.

International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder that when we support, uplift and invest in one another, our whole community benefits.

Thank you to Resource Industry Network for hosting such a fantastic event and bringing so many people together to celebrate the contribution of women in our region.

STRONG, RESILIENT, THRIVING

Taking a moment today to celebrate the wonderful, strong and resilient women we work with at McKays.

From the leaders guiding our teams, to the lawyers, paralegals, administrators and support staff who keep everything running smoothly each day – all whilst in a lot of cases, juggling also being mothers.

The women of McKays make an incredible contribution to our practice, our clients, and our community.

A massive shoutout also to our progressive male employees and spouses, who support and encourage our amazing women to strive for greatness.
