🌟 TAMARA HAGE – ONE OF OUR REGION’S RISING STARS 🌟

Congratulations to Tamara Hage on being named among the Daily Mercury’s 30 and Under Rising Stars of the Mackay and Whitsundays region.

At just 30, Tamara is already a Senior Associate at McKays Solicitors, advising individuals, family-owned businesses, local governments and ASX-listed organisations on complex commercial and business matters.

She has developed particular expertise in employment and industrial relations, personal property securities and local government law and leads McKays’ work involving the Personal Property Securities Act and Register.

Born and raised in Mackay, Tamara graduated with First Class Honours and a University Medal before returning home to build her legal career. She has also served as a Director of the Resource Industry Network, presented for organisations including the Australian HR Institute and RIN, and regularly delivers seminars to McKays’ clients.

What makes Tamara truly exceptional is not simply her technical expertise. She takes the time to understand each client’s organisation, industry and objectives, providing advice that is clear, practical and commercially valuable.

Tamara is an outstanding example of the sophisticated careers young professionals can build right here in regional Queensland, and we are very fortunate to have her as part of the McKays team.

Congratulations, Tamara. This recognition is thoroughly deserved! 👏

🏆 MCKAYS WINS NATIONAL AWARD 🏆

We are incredibly proud to announce that McKays Solicitors has won the Australian Legal Practice Management Award for Excellence in External Impact Initiatives.

The award recognises a program we created to give local students a first-hand look at the legal profession and the opportunities it can offer.

As a regional law firm, it was particularly rewarding to be recognised alongside, and competing against, some of Australia’s large national law firms.

To make the win even more special, our submission received the highest score across all categories in this year’s awards!

A great deal of work went into bringing the initiative to life, and we’re very grateful to our team and everyone who supported it.

We look forward to sharing more details soon.

PROUDLY SUPPORTING GALAXY INFINITY 🏐

McKays Solicitors is delighted to sponsor Galaxy Infinity from Galaxy Netball Club, competing in the Wednesday night Senior Competition at Mackay Netball Association.

Coached by Jordan Ahwang and Carolyn Taylor, the team brings together players aged from 14 to 39, with younger players developing alongside more experienced athletes in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Their new kit looks fantastic, and we’re excited to see the team representing us so proudly on the court each week.

Wishing Galaxy Infinity a great season ahead! 🏐

🏃MACKAY MARINA RUN 2026 🏃‍♀️

A cold start didn’t deter our enthusiastic runners on Sunday, and it was another reminder of just how competitive lawyers can be!

While there was plenty of friendly rivalry and good-natured banter along the course, the real highlight was the encouragement and support shown by everyone throughout the event. It was a fantastic morning and a great opportunity to come together outside the office.

Thank you to the organisers for another successful Marina Run. It was a great event, and we look forward to returning next year.

The 2026 Annual Wage Review Decision is out — and minimum wages are increasing.

The Fair Work Commission’s Expert Panel has announced that Modern Award wage rates will increase by 4.75% from 1 July 2026, with further adjustments applying to some of the lowest-paid classifications.

The National Minimum Wage will also increase to $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week from 1 July 2026.

For employers, now is the time to review payroll and remuneration arrangements to ensure employees are being paid correctly under the applicable Modern Award, enterprise agreement or National Minimum Wage.

Underpayments can occur even where an employee is covered by an enterprise agreement, so it is important to check the new rates carefully before they take effect.

CAREER PATHWAYS IN LAW ⚖️

Last week we went ‘back to school’ (please don’t ask us how long it’s been!).

Our team spent a wonderful evening at Holy Spirit College Mackay chatting with students and their parents about the many exciting career opportunities available in the legal industry.

Often, people assume the only pathway into law is through university. While becoming a solicitor is an incredibly rewarding option for many, we also wanted to highlight another important and valuable pathway – becoming a Paralegal.

For many young people, this pathway begins in administrative and legal support roles, often as their very first full-time position straight out of high school. From there, they gain hands-on experience, develop practical skills and build rewarding long-term careers within the legal profession.

At McKays, we’re passionate about supporting local students and helping them understand the different opportunities available within our industry, whether that’s through university, vocational training or learning on the job.

It was incredibly inspiring to hear students speak about their future goals, subject choices and ambitions. The future looks bright, and we look forward to continuing to support the next generation of legal professionals in our region.
