👨👩👧 ARE YOU EXEMPT FROM THE NEW STUDENT VISA FAMILY RESTRICTIONS?
From 2 October 2026, partners and dependent children generally cannot be included in a new or further Student visa application unless an exemption applies.
You may be able to include your family if you are:
✅ Studying a PhD
✅ Sponsored by DFAT or Defence
✅ Receiving a foreign government scholarship
✅ An eligible student from a Pacific country or an ASEAN member country
🌏 ASEAN countries:
Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
🇵🇭 Filipino students: you may fall within the ASEAN family inclusion exemption, subject to meeting the relevant requirements.
📌 This exemption concerns including family in your application. ASEAN nationality does not itself allow you to apply for a Student visa while in Australia.
The main applicant and included family members must be in the same location at lodgement. If your family already holds Student visas as your dependants, they may be eligible for inclusion in your next application made in Australia.
Check your circumstances before making study or family travel plans.
