Your visa records and tax information may be telling the same story or two very different ones.
The ATO has updated its Department of Home Affairs visa data-matching program, covering visa data through to the 2028–29 financial year.
Visa status, travel movements, sponsor information and other immigration records may be compared with information already held by the ATO to identify tax, superannuation, ABN and foreign-investment compliance risks.
However, this does not mean every mismatch automatically results in visa cancellation. The information may be used for risk assessment, education, compliance reviews, audits or investigations, depending on the circumstances.
The safest approach? Make sure your visa, employment and tax records are accurate and consistent.
