The view from the balcony of our new office at 99 Hannan Street ❤️

We’re still unpacking and getting a new phone system installed this week, but we wanted to give a big shout out to two local businesses who made the move easier: Mo from Unilakes Technologies and Ray and his team at "RJTJ's" - Realistic & Reliable Removals, Kalgoorlie & Surrounding Region.

Law firms are often quoted the highest prices for things they don’t even need, which drives up prices unnecessarily. Mo’s prices are not only competitive, he actually looks at what you have before recommending what you need. Since working with him, we’ve found two other businesses that had overcharged us or sold us things we already owned.

Ray and his team at RJTJ’s are straightforward, reliable, and easy to work with. No fuss, just a job well done, by a genuinely great group of blokes.

For many years we have had a huge surplus of office furniture. As with any good move, it’s time for us to get rid of everything we don’t need.

This is just a selection of what we have.

We are opening the floor for people and other businesses to come and see what we have. All offers can be considered, although we think that spectacular large solid wood table from our boardroom deserves more than a low ball.

That said, we welcome the community to check out what we have from 4pm to 5pm tomorrow, Wednesday 9 September 2026.

After Tasha Russell taking the reins in 2022, it’s time for the next step in the Ellery Brookman story.

From 7 September, we will be moving to 99 Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie.

New space, same team, same quality work, just a few doors down and a change that makes good sense for us.

We’re doing the usual moving chaos, so thank you for sticking with us while we get everything sorted. We can’t wait to show you the new space.

Let’s talk AI.

We don’t begrudge it. We’re not worried it’ll take our job. We’re trialling every legal‑specific AI system we can and using it to work faster and bring prices down.

But legally untrained people using ChatGPT are seriously misguided. It’s actually costing clients more for us to correct AI’s “research” than it would have to get proper advice.

We’ve even been caught out doing our own tech. Cue four hours down the garden path before AI finally conceded: “You’re correct, you can’t do that with that software.”

A few ways AI has gone wrong and only experience has caught it:

- Missed indemnity clauses: the clauses that decide who pays when things go bad, while other clauses limit recovery.

- Losing track of who’s asking: halfway through, it suggests amendments that benefit the opponent.

- Wrong court: confidently telling us to file a claim in a court that has no jurisdiction.

- Self‑represented opponents: likely to lose what is effectively a gift horse because they haven’t properly briefed AI on the background of the matter.

When we use AI, it’s legal‑specific. We question it, challenge it, jostle with it, because we know the subject matter.

If you don’t know your subject matter, to be frank, you’re absolutely nuts, and you’re likely to find out that AI is “not so smart” in the worst way possible.

We didn’t think we’d ever need to post this, but apparently the universe has recently thrown us a glitter covered curveball.

There’s a rumour going around that lawyers:

1. spend their weekends sliding down money hills like it’s a theme park; and

2. therefore don’t really mind if you “accidentally” forget to pay your bill.

As delightful as that visual is… sadly no. We’re a small local business. Our billing is modest in comparison to most law firms, while our overheads are as dramatically high, and our office printer has the emotional stability of a wet paper bag.

When bills are constantly argued or ignored, it doesn’t summon a magical legal unicorn who trots in and pays them. It just means we have to raise rates for everyone so we can keep the lights on and stop the printer from filing a workplace grievance.

Our time is how we keep the doors open. If we do work for you, we do need to charge for it. And unpaid fees don’t disappear - they simply wander around causing mischief for everyone else.

You wouldn’t work for free. Neither should we. Respecting our time helps us keep fees lower for everyone, and keeps the printer from staging a dramatic fainting episode.

Our receptionist, our young Taneishy, turns 18 tomorrow. We are giving her a few days off to be young (and we’d like to say dumb, but she’s remarkably responsible).
