You don’t need to be wealthy to need a Will.
And you definitely don’t need to be old.
If you’re in your 20s, you might think: What would I even put in a Will? I don’t own a house. I don’t have a huge amount of money.
But estate planning isn’t just about the size of your estate.
You might have savings, a car, investments, personal belongings, digital assets or a pet you adore. You might also have very particular ideas about who you would - and wouldn’t - want to benefit if something happened to you.
And sometimes, having a small estate makes good planning even more important.
If things aren’t properly structured, the cost and administrative work involved in sorting out a relatively modest estate can take a significant chunk out of what you actually leave behind.
A Will gives you the opportunity to make your wishes clear and, importantly, make things easier for the people who have to deal with everything after you’re gone.
Estate planning isn’t something you do because you expect to die.
It’s something you do because life is unpredictable - and because future you will never regret having your affairs in order.
