Can international students learn a trade in Australia? 🇦🇺🛠️

If you’re considering carpentry, automotive, air conditioning and refrigeration, or another trade, you might be wondering whether international students can undertake an Australian apprenticeship.

The answer isn’t always straightforward. Apprenticeship eligibility can depend on your visa conditions and state or territory requirements — but there are other ways international students can study and gain practical training in a trade in Australia.

We explain how trade study works, vocational placement, qualifications and what international students should know before choosing this pathway.

🇦🇺 Can you really get Australian PR without a skills assessment?

For some applicants, there may be an employer-sponsored pathway where a formal skills assessment is not required at certain stages.

One pathway involves the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa, followed by potential eligibility for the Subclass 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream after meeting the relevant requirements.

But there’s an important catch: this pathway doesn’t apply to everyone. Your occupation, work experience, employer sponsorship and individual circumstances all matter—and some occupations may still require a skills assessment.

Can you get Australian permanent residence through the Subclass 482 to 186 visa pathway without a skills assessment being a standard requirement?

In this video, we explain how eligible workers may progress from the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa to permanent residence through the Subclass 186 Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream.

🔑 What you'll learn:
✅ How employer sponsorship for the Subclass 482 visa works
✅ When a skills assessment may or may not be required for the 482 visa
✅ The relevant work experience requirement for the 482 visa
✅ How eligible sponsored employment may lead to the Subclass 186 TRT pathway
✅ Why the 186 TRT stream is different from points-tested visas such as the Subclass 189
✅ Other requirements you may need to meet for the Subclass 186 visa

For many occupations, a mandatory skills assessment is not required for the Subclass 482 visa, although requirements can apply to certain occupations and applicants, including some trades.

After meeting the applicable sponsored employment requirements, eligible 482 visa holders may be able to transition to permanent residence through the **Subclass 186 TRT stream**.

Unlike the Subclass 189 visa, this is not a competitive points-tested pathway. However, completing the required employment period does not automatically guarantee permanent residence. Applicants must still meet the relevant 186 visa and nomination requirements.

These can include age requirements, competent English, applicable salary and employment requirements, employer nomination and other eligibility criteria. Exemptions may apply in some circumstances.

🇦🇺 Another 189 invitation round is expected this September. Is your EOI ready?

An Expression of Interest (EOI) is one of the key steps for skilled migration pathways such as the 189, 190 and 491 visas and preparing it correctly matters.

Before an invitation round, it’s worth checking that your EOI reflects your current points, English results, skills assessment, work experience and other relevant details.

Not sure how the EOI process works or what happens after you submit one?

👉 Read our guide:

⚠️ Important: An EOI is not a visa application, and submitting one does not guarantee an invitation. Eligibility, points and invitation outcomes depend on individual circumstances and current migration requirements.
