482 VISA HOLDERS: Are you making any of these mistakes?

Holding a Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa comes with obligations that do not disappear once your visa is granted.

A change in your employment, occupation or future plans can affect your visa position, and some mistakes can create serious problems if they are not addressed early.

❌ Mistake #1: Starting with a new employer too soon
Changing employers does not mean you can simply start working for the new business. Generally, a new nomination needs to be approved before you commence work with the new sponsor.

❌ Mistake #2: Ignoring the timeframe after leaving your sponsor
If your employment ends, you do not have unlimited time to decide what to do next. Waiting until the last minute can significantly reduce your options.

❌ Mistake #3: Working in a different occupation
Your 482 visa is connected to your nominated occupation. Moving into a substantially different role may require a new nomination and potentially a new visa.

❌ Mistake #4: Thinking your employer can cancel your visa
Your employer cannot cancel your visa themselves. A visa cancellation decision can only be made by the Department of Home Affairs.

❌ Mistake #5: Waiting until your 482 is expiring to think about PR
This is one of the biggest mistakes we see.

If your long-term goal is Australian permanent residency, start planning early. Depending on your circumstances, your options may include employer-sponsored PR, skilled migration, state nomination, a Partner visa or another pathway.

It is disappointing to see that the promised 189 visa invitation round for September did not eventuate. It is now moved to the end of October. Personally I think there might be big changes brewing for general skilled migration before the end of the year.
