Applications for 2027 work experience placements at Richardson Murray open.

Richardson Murray is a boutique family law firm serving clients from Brisbane to Byron Bay — built on the belief that people going through the hardest chapter of their lives deserve lawyers who are genuinely in their corner. Our team is known for sharp legal work, straight answers, and a level of care that clients remember long after their matter closes.

For students, a boutique firm is where you learn fastest. You won't be filing documents in a back room. You'll sit alongside our solicitors, see how matters run from first consultation through to resolution, and understand the client relationships that sit at the centre of this work.

We run three 12-week placements across 2027:

📌 January intake — applications 12–26 October 2026, interviews 7–11 December, offers 16 December. Onboarding 14 January, commencing 18 January 2027.

📌 May intake — applications close 1 March 2027, interviews 12–16 April, offers 21 April. Onboarding 13 May, commencing 17 May 2027.

"Super isn't really 'ours' though, is it?" Actually — under Australian family law, yes it is💰

Superannuation is treated as property in a separation, even though you can't touch it until retirement. That means it can be split between you and your former partner as part of a property settlement, just like the house, savings or a car.

How it works: a superannuation splitting order (or agreement) transfers an amount from one partner's fund into the other's. It isn't paid out as cash and isn't taxed as income — the money simply moves between super accounts, and each of you keeps your own fund afterwards.

Why it matters: super is often one of the largest assets a couple has — sometimes bigger than the family home. Agreeing informally to "just leave super alone" can mean walking away from a significant part of what you're entitled to, especially after a long relationship with an income gap between partners.

The good news: splitting can usually be done by consent, without a court hearing, once you agree on the numbers.

The question that stops more settlement negotiations than the house: who keeps the dog? 🐶

For most families, a pet isn't "property" — it's a family member. And while the law has historically treated animals as just another asset, the framework has evolved: courts can now look at who actually cares for the pet, the children's bond, and the animal's welfare, not just whose name is on the registration.

In practice, most pet arrangements are decided by the practical stuff — who feeds, walks, pays the vet bills, and whose living situation genuinely suits the animal.

One tip from experience: put the pet on the table early in negotiations. Left until last, it becomes the emotional sticking point that holds up everything else — we've seen six-figure settlements stall over a spoodle.
