🥚🐰 Happily hop, It is nearly that time again. 🐰🥚
While the supermarkets have offered hot cross buns since Boxing Day, we have waited until now to launch our Easter craft competition. The children’s artwork always brings joy to our reception displays in the lead up to our Easter break.
To receive a PDF version, comment “Easter” and the document will be sent to your Messenger to download and print at home. You can also visit any B&B Legal office to collect a printed copy to take home and decorate.

While many might imagine our Paralegals Kylie and Derell gliding around the office like Rachel Zane from suits, we hate to break it to you… Having the title of Paralegal is little less glamorous around here. There’s no dramatic soundtrack, no slow-motion corridor walks, and definitely no time for power poses.

Instead, their day looks more like:
📞 Client calls back-to-back
📂 Deadlines approaching from three different directions
🗒 Post-it notes on top of Post-it notes (with one very important one stuck to the computer screen)
📧 47 emails marked “urgent”
📋 Chasing agents, accountants and other professionals for documents
👩‍🏫 Mentoring a large team of administration staff and providing a very patient listening ear whenever needed.
⚖ Ensuring compliance, accuracy and quality in every single file or client experience.
🥤 And gently reminding the solicitors to eat, drink… and return to their desks!

It’s organised chaos. It’s precision under pressure. It’s being pulled in multiple directions while still keeping every detail exactly where it needs to be. Every member plays a part in our beautiful team, but our paralegals are the super glue, keeping us together, on time and firmly in our chairs instead of under our desks (Especially on the days Derell makes loaded croissants).

A new change to NSW sentencing law is on its way...

The government has announced that “good character” will no longer be used to reduce an offender’s sentence. The reform aims to prevent further trauma to victim-survivors and limit the ability of offenders to rely on reputation or social standing to seek leniency. Courts will still consider genuine factors such as rehabilitation and risk of reoffending, but personal reputation alone will no longer soften a sentence.

What do you think... should good character still matter?

As we reconnect with our workplaces and businesses reopen for 2026, a reminder to small business owners and managers...
✨The right to disconnect now applies to you✨

With disputes expected to increase, now is the time to:
📵understand your obligations
📵set clear, role-appropriate expectations (Different roles carry different expectations of reasonableness)
📵review after-hours practices
📵support your team to genuinely disconnect

Employment law is no longer just about hours worked; it’s about how work enters our lives.

Congratulations to the very talented artists who created the winning baubles for 2025, and a big thank you to everyone who took the time to enter. ✨🎅🏼🎄

The creativity on display was exceptional! We had rainbows, gems, feathers, glitter, tinsel and cellophane transformed into stained-glass effects, along with many other imaginative designs. We were delighted to see entries from artists across Inverell, Glen Innes, and surrounding communities. We look forward to welcoming our little artists back in a few months for our egg decorating competition, and we cannot wait to see your creativity shine once again.

✨Why do we do this?✨
Because art matters. It gives voice where words fall short, invites connection between people, nurtures confidence in young minds, and reminds us of our shared humanity. Above all, it brings joy! And when joy is shared, it multiplies. If we can create a small moment of happiness for children, that joy ripples outward into the wider community by being seen and felt.

There is also a quieter joy that many do not witness, but we do. It is found in our waiting rooms, where people often sit during some of the most difficult moments of their lives, after the loss someone they love, while selling the family home filled with decades of memories, or while planning an estate knowing there may not be another Christmas ahead. In those moments, they step away from the chairs, and wander over to the wall to look at all of the little artworks hanging from string.

Sometimes they read the names and ages on the back and smile. “Wow! Jack, aged five, how clever,” they say, and if we’re lucky, a story follows about their own child at that age. For a moment, the heaviness lifts from a world of grief, stress, or uncertainty.

So while this may appear to be a silly little colouring-in competition, the joy it creates is far greater than it seems.

Can a text message be a legal agreement in NSW? 📱

Yes. in some cases a deal agreed on via text, email, or even DMs can be legally binding if key elements are there:

• An offer
• Acceptance
• Clear terms
• Intention to create legal relations
• Consideration (usually payment)

If both parties agree on important terms (like price and details), that casual conversation might hold up in court.

📝Important: Some contracts must be in writing and signed — like those involving the sale of land. A text won’t cut it in those cases.

So no, not every text = a contract.
But yes — texts can be used as evidence.

Don’t take the risk. Get legal advice before that chat becomes a commitment.

Today, on International Women’s Day 2025, we celebrate the incredible women who drive our firm forward. Our team is predominantly female - made up of dedicated mothers, career-driven professionals, and future leaders who shape the legal industry with their knowledge, compassion, and resilience.

This year’s theme, , reminds us that gender equality in the legal industry isn’t just about representation - it’s about creating a future where women thrive in leadership, advocacy, and justice.

Together, we ‘Accelerate Action’ towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all genders, but particularly for women in law and the girls with dreams who aspire to join the industry.
