Queensland’s domestic and family violence laws could be changing again.

The Domestic and Family Violence Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2026 was introduced into Queensland Parliament on 17 September and proposes a number of changes to the way domestic and family violence matters are dealt with.

One significant area involves Police Protection Directions (PPDs). These directions have been available to Queensland Police since January this year and can provide protection without initially requiring the matter to go before a court.

Under the new Bill, the duration of a PPD would increase from 12 months to three years.

The Bill also proposes:
• new offences for repeated breaches of a PPD or Domestic Violence Order
• stronger penalties in certain circumstances for breaching a PPD
• expanded conditions that police may include in a PPD
• expansion of electronic monitoring for high-risk perpetrators
• additional protections for victims in civil court proceedings.

These changes are proposed and have not yet become law.

Domestic and family violence law can be complex, particularly when protection orders, police directions and court proceedings are involved. Understanding your rights and obligations, and seeking advice early, can be important.
