There are new rules for Student visa (subclass 500) and Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) applications.

From 2 October 2026, the rules affect who can apply while in Australia and whether family can be included in an application. Limited exemptions apply.

“Australian Minister of Immigration & Home Affairs Tony Burke unveiled a major migration policy overhaul aimed at reducing Australia’s Net Overseas Migration (NOM). This has resulted tightening temporary visa framework.

The changes would affect international students, their families and other temporary visa holders.

The announcement contained following 3 areas:
1. Who can come to Australia 🇦🇺
2. ⁠Who can stay in Australia 🇦🇺
3. ⁠Who needs to leave Australia 🇦🇺

The key changes are as follows:

- Restricting International students bringing family members to Australia

- Restricting temporarily graduate visa holders bringing family members to Australia

- Restricting Temporary visa holders changing or extending their visas in Australia

- Restricting People remaining in Australia after their visa expires

- Measures introduced to reduce “visa hopping”

All these changes being introduced to reduce Net Overseas Migration (NOM) that had been a major issue in Australian 🇦🇺 political stage.”
