A 3-year multiple-entry Visitor visa grant feels really good.
But a 5-year multiple-entry Visitor visa grant โ€” after a previous refusal?
That one feels pretty exceptional. ๐ŸŽ‰

A month ago I posted about an overseas-trained doctor who had come to me after his Visitor visa application had been refused (3 times)
I am very pleased to now be able to share the outcome.

His Visitor visa was granted on 6 August 2026 โ€” ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฎ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ-๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฑ and multiple entry.

This client is an experienced General Practitioner who needed to travel to Australia as part of his pathway towards Australian medical registration. With the visa now granted, he can move forward with important steps, including attending the ARIMGSAS course and sitting the Australian Medical Council (AMC) Clinical Examination.

What makes this outcome feel particularly uplifting is because it started with a refusal. Adverse outcomes need be dealt with when a new application is lodged (something I learnt much about from my great teachers at Australian National University in 2009 - David Prince Lisa Chanesman FMIA MIMC MAICD)

When preparing my covering submission letter, I went back to the reasons for refusal, reviewed concerns raised by the Department, identified what was missing or unpersuasive, and strengthened the evidence. For overseas-trained doctors, there is an additional challenge: they have very good reasons for wanting to establish a future career in Australia. However, when applying for a Visitor visa, they must satisfy the Department that the visit itself is genuinely temporary.

That requires a carefully prepared application and often much more evidence than applicants initially expect. This is now something I consider myself to specialise in.

A one month visa grant would have been wonderful - but the Department granted him a five-year multiple-entry visa. This gives this doctor some flexibility while he progresses through the various Australian medical registration requirements.

This particular GP can now continue his pathway towards Australian medical registration. And I have to say โ€” a five-year grant after a refusal feels pretty fantastic.

To become accredited, Australian employers must qualify for accredited status and satisfy additional criteria. A significant benefit for accredited sponsors promoted by the Department of Home Affairs is:

priority processing of Skills in Demand (subclass 482) nominations and visa applications.

The Department's website still states that Accredited Sponsors receive priority when it processes subclass 482 nominations and visa applications.

But where does that priority now sit under the new Direction?

The Direction establishes processing priorities based on the nominated occupation and whether the applicant was inside or outside Australia at the time of application. Absent is reference to any separate priority category for Accredited Sponsors, unlike the previous Ministerial Direction 105. MD105 included it, "will continue prioritising applications for occupations in the healthcare and education sectors."

An Australian healthcare employer has gone through the process of obtaining accredited status expecting the benefits associated with accreditation.

An example of potentially unfair circumstance: The accredited sponsor sponsors an overseas General Practitioner under the subclass 482 program. If that doctor was outside Australia when the visa application was lodged, MD 119 places the application within the lowest priority category โ€” despite the occupation being healthcare and despite the employer being an Accredited Sponsor.

So now, what happens to the employer's accredited priority?
Can accreditation give that application priority within the offshore category?
Is there a separate mechanism for Accredited Sponsors that isn't apparent from MD 119?

I cannot find available Departmental information that clearly explains the interaction between these two processing arrangements. I have requested policy feedback about this matter through the required processes, and keen to hear from others that may be affected or know the answers.

NB: Sponsors of Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) can also apply for accreditation.
