Echoing these thoughts. Vale Justice Gaudron.

Vale the Hon Mary Gaudron KC. The first woman appointed to the High Court of Australia in 1987, serving until 2003.

Justice Gaudron formed a vital part of the Mason and Brennan courts’ transformation of constitutional and criminal law, including in Mabo [No 2], Dietrich and the establishment of the implied freedom of political communication.

She was a pioneer for women at the bar and on the bench, and passionately advocated for equal pay and equal treatment.

Known for transforming Australia's legal landscape by being the first woman appointed to the High Court of Australia, and the only woman Justice in the Court's first century, she broke new ground and inspired generations of Australians to pursue careers in the law and public service.

She died on 12 September 2026 at the age of 83.
