The Northern Territory Legal Assistance Forum (NTLAF) calls on the NT government to put victims’ voices and safety at the centre of any changes to suppression laws for sexual offences.
We are concerned about Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro’s announcement that her government intends to introduce legislation to lift suppression orders preventing the identification of people charged with serious sexual offences.
NTLAF warns that rushing through legislative changes based on one or two high-profile cases often leads to bad laws and unintended consequences.
Lifting suppression orders can give victims power over their own stories. For some victims, being able to speak publicly and see the accused named can be an important part of reclaiming control and seeking accountability. For others, public identification can bring exposure and risks they have not chosen.

NAAJA is back in the High Court of Australia today for the hearing of our case challenging certain provision of the Bail Act. The Grata Fund has provided financial support to NAAJA in this case, to ensure we can seek justice in court by testing this significant piece of legislation.

NAAJA acknowledges Leeanne Caton and her contribution as CEO of Aboriginal Housing NT.

Leeanne has shown strong leadership and commitment to improving housing outcomes for Aboriginal Terrritorians across the NT. Housing is fundamental to safety, wellbeing, family connection and self-determination, and her work has helped keep these issues in the public conversation.

We thank Leeanne for her advocacy and wish her all the best for what comes next.

Hi all,

It’s that time again! The 2026 NAAJA Spirit of Service Awards are here! 🌟

It’s time to celebrate and recognise the incredible NAAJA staff who go above and beyond to uphold NAAJA’s values and make a meaningful difference every day.

The work we do is critical, and the people who make it happen are passionate, dedicated and committed to supporting our clients, communities and stakeholders. Every day, our staff go above and beyond to make a difference, and these awards are an opportunity to recognise and celebrate their hard work, dedication and impact.

2026 NAAJA Spirit of Service Awards

If you work closely with a NAAJA staff member who you believe deserves recognition, we encourage you to nominate them for an award.

Scan the QR code below or nominate here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/2wWfPsJY2J

To help you choose the right category, please see the attached images outlining each category and the criteria.

This year, each award category is open to individual employees, with a dedicated Team Achievement category recognising the collective contributions and achievements of teams.

📝 How to nominate

Simply complete the nomination form and select the category you would like to nominate someone for.

When completing your nomination, please provide as much detail as possible about why you are nominating the person and how they demonstrate the relevant award criteria. The more detail and examples you can provide, the stronger the nomination will be.

You are welcome to nominate the same person for more than one category. However, you will need to submit a separate nomination form for each category, with each nomination clearly demonstrating how they meet the relevant criteria.

Thank you for taking the time to recognise and celebrate the amazing people who make NAAJA what it is. Your nominations are an important way to acknowledge the dedication, passion and contribution of our staff.

Let’s celebrate our people and the Spirit of Service that makes a difference every day!

Last week, Labor and the Coalition voted to continue compulsory income management indefinitely, despite ongoing opposition from Aboriginal communities and organisations across the Northern Territory.

NAAJA is extremely disappointed by this decision made without consultation, or even knowledge of the people to whom it applies, and without any meaningful opportunity for them to contest it.

Compulsory Income Management was first developed and implemented under the Northern Territory Intervention and has always been squarely aimed at controlling the lives of Aboriginal people of the NT.

NAAJA made a submission to the ongoing senate review into income management, further information can be found on our website www.naaja.org.au

Congratulations to the BDM Law and Justice Group leaders on this important work. Your leadership, cultural knowledge and commitment are helping make the justice system work better for young people, families and community. NAAJA is proud to work alongside you.

Last Thursday was Community Court day in Ramingining. The Binipiliŋmirriŋ Djägaginin Mala “BDM” Law and Justice Group leaders sat with the Judge in Court and gave recommendations on the right sentences for Yolŋu offenders.

Elders brought the gara (spear), bathi (dili bag) and maŋal' (woomera) into the court room, as symbols of peace and justice. In Ramingining, Balanda and Yolŋu are working together to make the justice system work better in both worlds.

If you have any questions about this work, you can contact ARDS at [email protected] or the BDM leaders. We are proud to share the story of this important work.
