The striking Gothic Bank had only recently been completed when this photograph was taken. Built in 1887 as a residence for bank manager George Verdon, its elaborate design came at a cost - with construction finishing at double the original budget.
More than a century later, it remains a distinctive part of Melbourne’s architectural history.

Introduced in England in 1696, the Window Tax meant property owners paid according to the number of windows in their home. For some, the solution was to simply brick them up.

Rippon Lea Estate in Elsternwick was completed in 1868 for Frederik Sargood who lived there with his wife, nine children, seven maids, seven gardeners, a butler, a coachman and a groom. The estate still holds the largest fernery in the Southern Hemisphere.

A good reminder that Melbourne's grandest homes were built as much for lifestyle as for status.
