Renee’s path to family law wasn’t exactly a straight line. With a background in journalism, she was drawn to law and originally had her sights set on becoming a criminal lawyer.

Then she found family law and realised it was the area she wanted to practise in.

🎓 Learning at the GCDLA x FCFCOA Seminar presented by Senior Judicial Registrar Sam Gray.

🎤 Hearing from our own Dan Bottrell as he presented at FLPA's farewell celebration for the Honourable Catherine Carew KC.

📚 Soaking up plenty of knowledge from industry experts (but that's a post of its own... stay tuned! )

🥪 Supporting one of our favourite Gold Coast initiatives, The Lunch Project, which donates a fresh school lunch to a local child for every $25 spent at its community café or on corporate catering.

🥂 Celebrating EOFY together (with an extra-long lunch, of course!).

👶 Celebrating our growing BGM family with lots of mums-to-be, welcoming new team members, and enjoying some very special visits from our colleagues' little ones.

These terms get used interchangeably, but under Australian family law, they mean very different things.

- Separation marks the end of the relationship. It requires intention, communication of that intention and action.

- Divorce is the legal end of a marriage. You need to be separated for 12 months before you can apply.

- Property Settlement involves dividing assets and liabilities. This can happen at any time from the date of separation up until the following strict deadlines:

📅 2 years from separation for de facto couples
📅 12 months after divorce for married couples

A Binding Financial Agreement (also known as a prenuptial agreement) follows the same principle.

It allows couples to agree on how assets and finances will be managed if the relationship ends, providing certainty and helping avoid unnecessary conflict in the future.

It doesn’t mean you expect the relationship to fail; rather, it’s about protecting both parties and making informed decisions while you’re both on the same page.
