A common theme for me this week is the difference between compassion and empathy...

Stick with me here as I make a case against empathy. That's right you read that correctly! When you put yourselves in the shoes of another person you fail to see things objectively. A critical error if you are a lawyer! Professor Bloom puts "the bright spotlight we shine on our chosen few makes us blind to the perspective of our adversaries, because everybody else falls outside our view".

Seeing things objectively doesn't mean you have to be heartless. Many lawyers are criticised for being cold because they only see the legal issues and not the very real human problems behind them. You can be objective and compassionate.

Tanya Singer (Neurologist) explains compassion as feeling not WITH a person, but FOR a person. For me it is recognising the real human problems without getting too wrapped up in them. For example, if client is a mess because they have lost a loved one, I don't fall to pieces with them (empathy). Rather, I pick some of the pieces for them (compassion).

In the lead up to RUOK day, let's talk about anxiety and depression... I was listening to a podcast the other day which referred the concept of having a "resilience bank account". We all accumulate resilience, but in stressful situations our reserves can get depleted (Professor Ann Masten Phd)... It is no wonder many people in Victoria are feeling exhausted. After 6 months of lockdown we are quite literally running on empty.
